Kang Ji Sugar Coated Fruits has tanghulu at 313 Somerset
Tanghulu: a simple candy comprising fruits and sugar syrup, this traditional Chinese snack-on-a-skewer has been making waves on social media since 2023. Good news: these vibrant candied fruits can now be found in Singapore at Kang Ji Sugar Coated Fruits, a grab-and-go kiosk at 313 Somerset.
There are two types of tanghulu here, namely the Classic Long Stick and Mini Box. The former lets you pick from seven different flavours, while the latter boasts a total of 14 to choose from. FYI, their Mini Box requries you to get a minimum of five sticks, which will set you back $9.90.
We got a Grape Classic Long Stick ($5.90), which comprised eight candied green grapes. The price was a little steep for a single stick, but if it makes you feel any better, the grapes were substantial in size and more than enough to satisfy your sweet tooth.
If you’re sharing with friends, we recommend the Mini Box instead. Each skewer comes with three pieces of fruit; we chose a Red Grape ($2.90), Green Grape ($2.90), Cherry Tomato ($2.90) for our first stick, and two sticks of their Mix ($2.90) flavour to complete the minimum set of five.
For something different, get your hands on the Haw+Durian ($2.90) or Haw+Matcha ($2.90), which unfortunately wasn’t available during our visit. In case you’re wondering, the “haw” in these flavours refers to hawthorn berries, which taste slightly tangy and sweet at the same time.
A word of caution, though, it’s best to have these candied treats indoors as the sugar syrup melts rather quickly in the scorching heat.
Kang Ji Sugar Coated Fruits is located in the basement of 313 Somerset, right across from Mister Donut. The store opens at 10am, but we encourage you to head down slightly after the opening hour as the display of fruit skewers wasn’t complete during our visit.
