Lai Heng Handmade Teochew Kueh: Michelin-Approved Traditional Kueh In Jurong East

Lai Heng Handmade Teochew Kueh has cheap kueh in Yuhua Market & Hawker Centre

Handmade Teochew kueh stalls are getting harder to come by these days, but there are still a few carrying that mantle. One of the best stalls for soon kueh or png kueh lovingly made by hand is Lai Heng Handmade Teochew Kueh, a stall in Yuhua Market & Hawker Centre. They’ve been a fixture on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list for a few years now.

At the stall, you’re likely to see the crew crafting kueh by hand, which are then either steamed or pan-fried as orders come along. That’s right, you can choose to have the kueh steamed the old-fashioned way, or fried till slightly crispy on the outside.

The classic Soon Kueh (from $1.10) is filled with shredded bamboo shoots, turnip, and bits of hae bee AKA dried shrimp for that extra savouriness. The chewy kueh wrapping harmonises all the different textures of the filling together, and in my opinion, it’s even better with that slight crispiness of the pan-fried version.

To spice things up a little, be sure to order the Ku Chai Kueh (from $1.10) and Cabbage Kueh (from $1.10) as well. For the uninitiated, ku chai kueh is filled with chives, giving this kueh its grassy and onion-y notes.

And then there’s the Png Kueh (from $1.40), which is the heartiest snack of the bunch. It features glutinous rice, peanuts, hae bee and more, all wrapped up in a gorgeous pink skin that gives it the appearance of a peach.

If you’re a fan of kueh, there’s no reason not to give Lai Heng Handmade Teochew Kueh a shot—unless, of course, Jurong East is too far for you to make the trip.
