In case you didn’t know, the Luckin Black Cup Single Origin Espresso (SOE) series features premium coffee beans that come from a specific region or country, and have a unique flavour profile determined by the area’s soil, climate, altitude and more. The range is also sourced and hand-selected as part of Luckin Coffee’s “Global Bean Hunting Initiative” under the guidance of their World Barista Championship (WBC) champions team, which comprises award-winning baristas such as Mr. Boram Um who won the competition in 2023.

We had the opportunity to attend an exclusive workshop held by Mr. Boram, where we got to try Luckin Coffee’s latest Sumatra Gayo range, also known as the Treasure of Tropical Rainforest. Sourced from the Gayo region in Sumatra, Indonesia, these beans benefit from the region’s rich volcanic soil and warm, humid climate. The Sumatra Gayo beans are also processed using traditional Indonesian wet hulling techniques—known as giling basah—resulting in a velvety-rich body and an intense, dark chocolate flavour profile.

You can now get these drinks at Luckin Coffee outlets islandwide. Those who love their coffee black can opt for the Sumatra Gayo Americano ($5.60), available iced or hot. This brew boasts a bold aroma with juicy cherry notes, along with a lingering aftertaste of caramel and cedarwood—a result of the rich volcanic soil and humid climate in Indonesia.

Otherwise, the Sumatra Gayo Latte ($6.40) is another great way to enjoy this medium-roast brew. The creamy and silky milk goes well with the freshly pulled espresso, which boasts nutty, fragrant notes of dark chocolate.

Alternatively, opt for the Sumatra Gayo Flat White ($6.40), which stars a milky foam that contrasts excellently with the sweetness of the full-bodied coffee.

If you’re up for something more indulgent, we recommend the Sumatra Gayo Dirty ($6.80), which consists of cold milk topped with a freshly pulled ristretto shot. On the first sip, you get the bold espresso, followed by a generous layer of creamy milk.

While you’re there, consider trying Luckin Coffee’s Yirgacheffe range, which is also part of their premium Black Cup series. These coffee beans have bagged the International Institute of Coffee Tasters (IIAC) Platinum Medal twice, in 2021 and 2023, so you know they’re legit!
