Mon Kee Cafe opens at The Food Place at Raffles City

Hot on the heels of Keming Bing Sat’s arrival in Singapore is the opening of Mon Kee Cafe, another Hong Kong-famous cha chaan teng chain! The new cafe opened in early July at The Food Place, the food court of Raffles City Shopping Centre. They have four other outlets across Hong Kong, but this Singapore outlet will mark their first overseas foray.

We visited The Food Place to see if Mon Kee Cafe lived up to the hype. Unlike the original eatery in Hong Kong, which serves other dishes such as bolo buns and macaroni, the food court stall here only serves their scrambled egg rice.

Their signature Char Siew Scrambled Egg Rice with Homemade Sweet Soy Sauce ($8.50) came with white rice blanketed in a fluffy, runny egg that was just barely set, and topped with a generous helping of roasted char siew slices.

The highlight of the dish was their scrambled eggs, which were soft, creamy, and silky smooth. While the other components were not as impressive, with rather tough pieces of char siew, they melded well in one bite, held together with the sweet-savoury soy sauce.

We also tried their Beef Scrambled Egg Rice with Coriander ($9), which came with slices of stir-fried beef.

The beef was well-marinated, with a balance of sweet and salty notes, but the texture leaned on the chewier, more rubbery side. While the coriander added a zing to the dish, we felt that it was not impressive overall.

Our top pick is the Roasted Pork Scrambled Egg Rice ($10), featuring chunks of fatty pork belly alongside soft scrambled eggs.

These pork slices came with crispy skin and a large proportion of tender, melt-in-your-mouth fat, although they were rather thinly sliced. Alongside the egg, rice, and sauce, the variety of textures and flavours in this dish stood out the most, making it our go-to choice.

You can pair any dish with their house-special Silky HK Style Milk Tea for $3. The milk tea boasted strong, albeit astringent, Ceylon tea flavours, with the milk coming to the fore. We thought that the drink reminded us of those served on the streets of Hong Kong, and paired well with the dishes here.

Mon Kee Cafe sits inside The Food Place by Food Republic, joining 19 other stalls to ensure that you can find whatever you are craving. The interior of the food court is bright and lively, with plenty of seats.

The food court is a three-minute walk from City Hall MRT Station.

Mon Kee Cafe – Eatbook review

Does Mon Kee really measure up to the hype it had garnered? Not quite. While I appreciate the eggs, which had a great texture, the other components of the dishes were lacking, with the char siew and beef being rather chewy and tough. The milk tea, while strong and bold, was not worth the $3 upgrade, especially with other options available at the drinks stall.

That being said, for food court fare, Mon Kee is a decent option; however, I recommend checking out the other Michelin-approved offerings in The Food Place before settling for this stall.
