Our team has visited several retro diners over the years, cue Joji’s Diner, and recently Gwen’s Frozen Custard and Ices. The next one to watch is Sally’s Diner, a Muslim-friendly eatery located in Sengkang that’s open 24 hours daily!

While most other diner concepts serve mostly American food, Sally’s focuses on local favourites, which span Western, Chinese, Malay, and Indian dishes.

We started with their signature Sally’s Curry Chicken ($8.17+), which you can pair with French loaf or rice. The chicken curry was super gao, just as advertised, but the layer of oil sitting on top made it a little cloying towards the end. I could tell that they used a liberal amount of spices, as the curry was quite fragrant too.

Each piece of chicken was super tender, and the potatoes were soft and fluffy, perfect to mop up the savoury gravy. Unfortunately, the bread that it came with ended up a little soggy after it was dipped in. Maybe rice would have made for a better pairing.

Their Chicken Cutlet ($12.75+) was another crowd-pleaser, and I could see why. The dish featured a huge fried chicken cutlet, paired with fries, salad, coleslaw, and a lemon butter sauce on the side.

The fried chicken was nicely crispy and flavourful, but I felt like they could have afforded to reduce the oil, as the batter was quite greasy.

Nevertheless, the tangy and creamy lemon butter sauce was a good addition to the dish, as it complemented the fries and chicken well.

The items we had were pretty heavy so far, so we got the Hainanese Toast Set ($5.30+) as a light snack. We opted for the toast with kaya and butter, but you can also get it with butter, butter and sugar, kaya, or peanut butter.

The set comes with soft-boiled eggs and a choice of Kopi, Teh, Milo, or Yuan Yang. We decided to go with the classic kopi and teh, which were both surprisingly pretty solid. They were strong and aromatic, and they seemed to have nailed the sweetness level in the two drinks as well.

As for the toast, we liked how generous they were with the kaya spread and butter. On the flip side, the bread was slightly stale and dry. But we gave it a good dunk into the jammy eggs for a quick fix.
