Tong Xin Gu Wei sells pork porridge in Serangoon Gardens

When it comes to comfort food, few things hit the spot like a steaming bowl of thick congee. Pork porridge is a classic pick, so if you live in Hougang, you’ll definitely want to check out Tong Xin Gui Wei, located in Serangoon Gardens Hawker Centre, home to the famous Serangoon Gardens Bakery & Confectionery.

While the stall is known for selling Chinese New Year goodies and traditional snacks, but don’t let that fool you. Look inside the stall and you’ll see a food menu, where they advertise a selection of old-school congee dishes you can try, priced from $4.

For the price, you get a bowl of Pork Porridge, which features stick-to-your-ribs congee topped with minced pork and QQ pork balls, dressed with sesame oil. It’s simple, but the kind of food you’d want after a long, tiring day.

Alternatively, try their lighter Fish Porridge, which comes with the same thick congee, albeit with sliced fish, fried shallots, and slices of ginger for some zing. Each bowl is priced at $6.

For the best of both worlds, you can get their Sliced Fish + Pork Porridge ($8).

Aside from congee, Tong Xin Gui Wei also sells a selection of old-school snacks. Their Signature Yam Cake ($5) is one such example—freshly steamed daily, each piece is flavoured with umami pieces of mushroom and dried shrimp. If you want, you can have their Yam Cake with Chee Cheong Fun on the side, for just $5. 

For something sweet, their Ang Ku Kueh is one to try, and priced at $1.30 each. Each piece stars thin kueh skin and a moreish mung bean filling.
