If you’re a fan of both nasi lemak and shell-out, it’s time you make your way to Walaku, an Asian-Western fusion restaurant in Joo Chiat. And if you’re unfamiliar with the concept of shell-out, it is essentially a bucket full of seafood that’s marinated in rich and savoury sauces, and then emptied onto a plastic sheet-covered table.

The must-order at Walaku is their signature Nasi Lemak Shell Out ($26.50++), a seafood bucket that you won’t find anywhere else, starring shell-out with their house-special sauce, served with nasi lemak rice!

It features a variety of seafood, such as crabs, New Zealand mussels, scallops, and crayfish, all of which are cooked in Walaku’s tantalising sambal sauce. Each set also comes with corn, vegetables, and an omelette. Do note that a minimum order of two sets is required.

Another super popular dish at Walaku is a lesser seen Nasi Lemak Bakar, AKA grilled nasi lemak. Get the premium Garlic Cheese Lobster ($22++) for something indulgent, or the signature Ayam Goreng Rempah ($7.80++) if you prefer to stick to the classics. Both dishes are served with fragrant coconut rice that’s wrapped in a banana leaf, and then grilled to give it an extra smoky touch.

For a unique dish, order the Nasi Goreng Kerabu With Ayam Percik ($13++), which sees grilled chicken topped with percik sauce: a coconut cream-based gravy. This dish is accompanied by tangy mango salad, shrimp chips, and sambal.

If you’re interested in Walaku’s Western fare, we recommend the Salted Egg Pasta & Grilled Salmon ($16.90++). The pasta is said to be highly savoury, rich, and creamy, complementing the salmon’s crisp exterior.

Alternatively, you can also try the Seafood Lemak Padang Pasta ($15.90++), which features succulent prawns, squid, and New Zealand mussels cooked in a spicy and coconutty sauce. It is then topped with a poached egg for added creaminess.

As for dessert, get the crowd-favourite Onde-Ondeh Martabak Manis ($7++). This fluffy pandan pancake is stuffed with grated coconut that’s soaked in gula melaka syrup, much like the traditional kueh.

The Red Velvet Martabak Manis ($7++) also comes highly recommended. It sees a thick red velvet pancake with chocolate spread, chocolate rice, and heaps of grated cheese.

For more affordable seafood bucket options, check out Bucketta for seafood buffets from $49.90++. Alternatively, Smile Martabak offers legit Indonesian martabak manis with unique flavours including pandan cheese, durian and more.
