Warung Sika in Canggu Bali has affordable nasi campur

Canggu has its fair share of pretty cafes and bars, but this coastal village also has one of my favourite warungs in Bali: Warung Sika. Located in the heart of Canggu, the family-owned stall offers something similar to our local cai fan concept, where customers get to choose their rice before picking accompanying vegetables and meat for their meal. In Indonesia, these rice dishes are also commonly referred to as nasi campur.

Warung Sika is immensely popular among locals and tourists alike, as they’re known to serve one of the cheapest—and most delicious—nasi campur in Canggu. Plus, they also offer vegan and vegetarian options.

Aesthetics-wise, there’s nothing fancy about the warung. Long wooden tables are lined up just in front of the food display for communal dining, along with cosy rattan chairs for customers to sit on. If you’re dining as a couple, they’ve also got smaller tables beside the wall so you can enjoy your meal in private.

You don’t need to worry about the language barrier here. All you need to do is choose your rice first––white, red, or yellow––before pointing to the different foods you want from the display. Once you’ve chosen all your ingredients, simply head to the cashier’s desk where the staff will pass you a card reflecting the price of your dish. Payment is made once you’ve finished eating.

We went for a plate of yellow rice topped with tempeh, tofu, and mixed vegetables. This hearty vegetarian meal only set us back IDR33K (~S$2.96). The fried tempeh stole the show with its nutty flavours.

I preferred the non-spicy tempeh to the spicy version, as it had a hint of sweetness from the kecap manis. It had a slight crunchiness that reminded me of rice crackers, and was coated in a sticky glaze.

My colleague ordered a serving of red rice with vegetables, one fried chicken, and one ayam bakar. This only cost us IDR47K (~S$4.22). We fell in love with the tender charcoal-grilled chicken, which was caramelised with sweet soy sauce.

What made this ayam bakar so good was its heavy smokiness paired with a tinge of sweetness. The chicken was easy to slice into, and once cut open, revealed its juicy, tender insides. If you like spicy, feel free to ask the warung aunty for a dollop of sambal chilli paste, which packs quite a punch.
