Freshly opened within walking distance of Clementi MRT Station is Wonders West Wind, founded by the same folks behind Wonders Ang Mo Kio. Get it? Because Clementi is in the West? Mahjong lovers will get a chuckle out of the nod to the four wind tiles.

It’s been about a year since the Ang Mo Kio outlet opened, serving mochi waffles and ice cream in a trendy setting adorned with mahjong motifs.

Those who’ve been to their OG branch would know that Wonders’ ice cream flavours all have clever mahjong-related names in Chinese. These include 花胡 (huā hú) for Osmanthus Oolong, which references flower tiles and “hu”, meaning to win in mahjong, and 门青 (mén qīng) for Pistachio, a play on 门清 (mén qīng) or a fully concealed hand.

Ice cream is priced from $4.50 for a single scoop, with top-ups of $0.90 and $1.70 per scoop for premium and gourmet flavours respectively. You can also get a crunchy cone for an additional $1.30.

Keep an eye out for creative seasonal flavours too. For instance, this year’s CNY specials include Kueh Bangkit and Mandarin Orange with Osmanthus Jelly. Their Chinese names are 白板 (bái bǎn) and 二筒 (èr tǒng) respectively, which are both mahjong tiles.

Over at this new Clementi outlet, you’ll also be able to tuck in to nian gao waffles ($6.30). These waffles are fluffy, aromatic, and sandwiched with chunks of nian gao that aren’t too sweet, so you won’t have to worry that your dessert will be too sugary.

Of course, their signature pandan mochi waffles ($6.10) are also available. These boast a delicate floral fragrance and provide a twist on pandan chiffon cakes we all know and love. If you prefer your waffles plain, go for the no-frills original Belgian waffle ($6.10) or croffle ($4.10).

Wonders Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee

If you’re craving a cuppa, you can expect quality brews here. Wonders West Wind uses beans sourced from local brewers Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee. In fact, they have a specially made blend of espresso called 24/7 Mahjong. Concocted to pair with their dessert offerings, the coffee blend has notes of malt, hazelnuts, and dark chocolate. You can bring a bag home for $18.90.

Coffee is priced from $4. We recommend getting an affogato ($5.90) for a shot of espresso paired with a scoop of ice cream. If coffee’s not your thing, Wonders West Wind also serves matcha ($5.90), hot or iced chocolate ($4.50), and a selection of artisanal tea ($4.50).

You’ll be savouring their desserts amongst the same mahjong merch and paraphernalia at the Ang Mo Kio outlet. Think mahjong tables that will have you yearning to play a round, giant dice as seats, plus an entire wall display of mahjong plushies and figurines. You can also purchase mahjong-themed accessories like totes bags, phone cases, and caps from $8.80.

Perhaps their most iconic piece of decor, the 發 (fā) infinity mirror is a must to snap a pic with before you go. The tunnel-like effect is rather trippy when you view it from different angles.
