We love a good zi char meal, so when we heard about Yang Ming Seafood’s latest outlet in VivoCity, we knew we had to check them out.  Yang Ming Seafood has made quite a name for themselves in the zi char scene, by specialising in a huge range of fresh and live seafood dishes.

What’s different about the chain’s latest VivoCity outlet is that it mimics a kelong, AKA an offshore structure used back in the day by fishermen to catch fish. The space is complete with wooden interiors, barrels, and an LED visual meant to replicate live fish storage. Moreover, the restaurant is situated by the waterfront, so you get stunning views of the riverside too.

Moving on to the food, start your meal with the outlet-exclusive Chicken Broth with Baby Cabbage ($88++ per portion). It’s made with chicken collagen, which gives the broth a delightful viscosity. The soup was hearty and rich, yet clean-tasting.

Next up, our personal favourite: the Milky Sea Prawns ($28++/$42++/$56++), another outlet-exclusive item. This starred some of the largest and juiciest prawns we have seen, sitting in a creamy sauce redolent of diced chilli and curry leaves.

Moving on to the food, a must try at Yang Ming Seafood is their signature Crab Stewed Bee Hoon ($11++ per 100g). The bee hoon noodles were full of umami, bursting with flavours of the sweet crab stew that it was coated in.

If crab is your jam, try their Fragrant Crispy Rice Crab ($11++ per 100g) which has plenty of sweet flesh and roe for you to dig your hands into!

If you refuse to get your hands dirty, the eatery also has several meat dishes such as the Dry Braised Pork Ribs ($20++/$30++/$40++). The rib pieces were not only tender but were marinated perfectly in the dark sauce.

Complete your meal with the variety of traditional teas or wines they carry in their special cellar, starting from as low as $29++ per bottle.
