When we visited YouFu Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee back when they first opened at Golden Mile Food Centre in 2020, the stall was on its their way to hokkien mee stardom. It has since become one of the most famous of its kind in the country, appearing on many “best of” lists relating to the dish.
The stall was founded by brothers Andre and Mitchell, both of whom are in their twenties. Mitchell, who is currently operating the Golden Mile outlet, invited us to try their hokkien mee once again, saying that the recipe has been tweaked since then. We loved their rendition the first time around, so let’s see if we are as big fans of the dish this time.
A plate of hokkien mee at YouFu starts from $6. When our plate arrived, we were immediately impressed by the appearance of this rendition, with the creamy stock thoroughly saturating the pile of yellow noodles and bee hoon.
Flavour-wise, YouFu’s hokkien mee was rich and full of umami, with prominent crustacean notes punctuating each bite. There’s a good amount of wok hei in the noodles as well, as evidenced by the slightly charred bits of egg or noodle strewn throughout the dish, and of course, the smoky aroma of the noodles themselves.
Compared to the prawns used at other hokkien mee stalls, we would say the ones here were chunkier than average. Not large, mind you, but sizeable enough that there wasn’t much to complain about—in this era of shrinkflation, that’s more than we can ask for.
While the sotong and sliced pork belly here were soft and fresh, we did think that there wasn’t enough of it on this plate. Having more of those would’ve made the dish feel less streamlined and instead more textured and varied.
YouFu’s chilli harmonises well with the noodles, and possesses a good spicy kick to boot. Because of how flavourful the noodles already are, however, the chilli isn’t essential to your enjoyment of the dish—those who are spice-averse can rest assured that the dish is moreish on its own.
The stall is located at a breezy corner of Golden Mile Food Centre, right by the staircase to the carpark. It’s located on the first floor and is well-ventilated and airy, although it is situated near the toilets.
Golden Mile Food Centre is an eight-minute walk from Nicoll Highway MRT Station.
YouFu continues to serve up excellent plates of hokkien mee. If you’re a fan of the dish and are yet to try YouFu, be sure to give this stall a shot.
