1. Bee Cheng HiangÂ

Bee Cheng Hiang may be most known for their bak kwa, but they’ve also cleverly incorporated the barbecued pork snack into their bak zhang for the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival. There’s the Gourmet Bakkwa Rice Dumpling ($8), which comes with sweet bak kwa, shiitake mushroom, and chestnut, wrapped in aromatic glutinous rice. Alternatively, go for the Applewood Iberico Rice Dumpling ($15), a premium rendition made with the brand’s finest bak kwa made with Applewood Marbled Iberico Pork and salted egg yolk.

2. Thye Moh Chan
Teochew pastry shop Thye Moh Chan, in celebration of its 80th anniversary this year, has prepared an irresistible range of bak chang to mark the Dragon Boat Festival. The selection includes their well-loved Teochew Double Delight Bak Chang ($7.20) and Teochew Salted Egg Bak Chang ($7.20), along with the new Teochew Vegetarian Chang ($7.20): sweet dried radish, mushrooms, and mutton mock mutton meat.
Try them from now till 10 June, at selected BreadTalk, Toast Box, and Thye Moh Chan stores, as well as online through Grabfood and Deliveroo.

3. Joo Chiat Kim Choo

For handmade rice dumplings that are made from scratch daily, head to Joo Chiat Kim Choo, an award-winning homegrown business that has lasted through the generations. You won’t go wrong with their traditional Nyonya Rice Dumpling ($6.50+), a sweet version consisting of minced lean pork and winter melon strips, paired with sticky rice. For something more premium, order the Emperor’s Rice Dumpling ($18.80+) to share. This bak zhang contains a slew of ingredients including premium braised pork, dried scallops, lup cheong, and salted egg yolk, all cooked with a secret blend of 22 spices.

4. The Deli at Goodwood Park

Goodwood Park Hotel’s deli has some unique bak chang flavours in their lineup this year, such as the Mini ‘Kee Zhang’ with D24 Durian Dip ($14 for three), which features a moist rice dumpling served with a rice durian paste on the side. There’s even a Black Pepper Crab Rice Dumpling ($32 for two), which will make a great conversation starter at any gathering!Â

5. Hai Tien Lo

Award-winning Cantonese restaurant Hai Tien Lo’s Supreme Rice Dumpling ($45+) is a must-order if you’re hosting friends or family this year. This massive bak chang feeds a party of four to six, and comes with pork belly, whole abalone, chestnuts, salted egg yolk, green beans, lotus seeds, and glutinous rice. There’s also the orh nee-inspired Teochew Dumpling with Yam Paste and Gingko Nuts ($13+) if you’re craving a sweet treat.

The team of master chefs at Cantonese fine-dining restaurant Yan Ting have come together to craft a series of luxurious glutinous rice dumplings, which are available for dine-in, takeaway, and delivery. The Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Abalone and Golden Dried Scallops ($44.70)Â is sure to impress mum, dad, or your in-laws, starring roast duck, pork belly, chestnut, salted egg yolk, and shiitake mushrooms. Otherwise, the Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Pork Belly and Salted Egg Yolk ($26.15)Â is a crowd pleaser comprising creamy salted egg yolk and tender briased pork belly.Â

8. Swensen’s

If you missed out on Swensen’s Pulut Hitam Rice Dumpling Ice Cream ($8.80) last year, you’ll be glad to know that it’s making a comeback. Cut into the dessert to reveal a purple interior speckled with black glutinous rice bits—reminiscent of the sticky rice dessert in traditional bak chang form. The pulut hitam ice cream also houses a decadent salted egg yolk chocolate bon bon, which offers a sweet-savoury punch when you bite into it. There’s also an all-new Kueh Salat Rice Dumpling Ice Cream (price TBD), a riff on the popular Nyonya kueh.Â

9. Kuriya Japanese MarketÂ

For something a little different this year, try Kuriya Japanese Market‘s Zong-nigiri, which are fusion onigiri-style dumplings. Avaialble from now till 23 June 2024, these cute rice dumplings are available in six flavours: Pork, Nyonya Pork, Nyonya Chicken, Chestnut Mushroom, XO Dried Scallop, and Abalone. The first four are priced at $4+ each, while the last two are $4.50+. There’s also the option of getting the Bundle of 6 ($22+), which comes in a gift box.

Mandarin Oriental‘s Cherry Garden has three fancy bak chang flavours this year: Traditional Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Salted Egg Yolk ($28+), Kurobuta Pork Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Sweet Preserved Vegetables and Organic Black Garlic ($30+), and a vegetarian-friendly Black Truffle and Wild Mushroom Vegetarian Glutinous Rice Dumpling ($28+). There’s also a Duo Dumpling set at $52+, which lets you choose two flavours!
