Bee Cheng Hiang x HEYTEA’s bak kwa soft serve
Collaborations between brands in the fashion industry are a dime a dozen, but coming across such partnerships in Singapore’s food scene is similar to taking an unobstructed selfie at Jewel Changi Airport. Â
Bucking the trend, Bee Cheng Hiang has collaborated with HEYTEA to launch a limited-edition soft serve with actual bak kwa in it.
Sold at both of HEYTEA’s outlets at ION and Clarke Quay, this unique dessert will only be available from 1 to 30 June 2019. Â
The Tea King Crispy Cone with Golden Coin ($6.80) comes with a slight hint of fragrant tea aroma that ends off with a smooth velvety texture.
A piece of Bee Cheng Hiang’s golden coin bak kwa is carefully perched atop, allowing it to be used as a makeshift spoon. I liked how both sweet and salty flavours went well here, with the bak kwa providing a nice burst of meatiness and a pleasant caramelised glaze.
Considering that the Tea King Crispy Cone costs $2.80, sans the golden coin, we find ourselves questioning the price of this dish.
Is it worth it? Well, if you’re the kind of person who carries bak kwa coins with you, this sweet treat might sound ridiculously expensive. For those who don’t, it’s nice to give this novel creation a try.
The Salted Egg Yolk Crispy Cone with Krispee Frostee ($5.80) is an innovative and unique creation, with a mildly flavoured salted egg soft serve base that’s dusted with Bee Cheng Hiang’s Krispee Frostee.
Crispier than traditional pork floss, but still packing the same meaty punch, this savoury topping had a nice crisp texture. We only wished that more of it was dusted on.
It’s interesting to see how other brands can work and develop new creations in the future. Partnerships between Bee Cheng Hiang And HEYTEA might be a tad gimmicky, but the flavours do work, especially for the salted egg yolk soft serve.
That being said, we will only try it once.
