Baker’s Brew has vegetable cakes with real veggie toppings

As March draws to a close, we enter the season of weird and wacky food creations in the name of April Fool’s Day. Swensen’s mala “fried chicken” ice cream tickled both our taste buds and funny bones, and now Baker’s Brew is throwing their hat in the ring with a series of Vegetable Cakes.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re presenting them to a veggie lover or hardcore anti-veggie friend, the heaping amounts of real vegetables artistically adorning the cakes is sure to get some laughs. It’s not just for show, either. The entire thing is edible, and you can choose from over ten options for the actual cake. Options include Chocolate, Ondeh Ondeh, Lychee Mango, Earl Grey Lavender, and Yubari Melon.

Bean sprouts are a controversial veggie. I personally love them, but there are people who are so repulsed by the humble taugeh that they’d meticulously pick them out of their char kway teow to avoid tasting a stray strand. Wouldn’t it be hilarious to bestow upon them a Taugeh Cake ($108)?

The most beautiful design is probably the Mushroom Cake ($128), featuring an earth-toned colour palette and a whimsical, fairytale forest kind of aesthetic. It’s topped with a mix of shiitake, shimeji, and oyster mushrooms—a sure-fire hit with all the fun guys and fun gals.

If you know someone who’s always being told to eat their greens, gift them the Asparagus Cake ($118) or Pea Cake ($148).

The former features asparagus spears all around the perimeter, while the latter is a pyramid studded with peas—a true geometrical masterpiece!

Mention “carrot cake”, and you either conjure images of Singapore’s black or white carrot cake AKA chai tow kway, or the ang moh carrot cake frosted with cream cheese. Well, Baker’s Brew is taking things quite literally with their Carrot Cake ($148), lined with actual carrot slices around the sides. Not gonna lie, the vibrant orange shade and scalloped effect really works. She’s a beaut.
Jokes aside, the veggie toppings are 100% real and not treated with any preservatives that might render them unsuitable for consumption, so don’t worry about food wastage. They are parboiled to retain the bright colours and structural integrity. For veggies which can usually be eaten raw, such as taugeh and carrots, you can feel free to nibble on them right away. If not, set the veggie adornments aside, give them a quick rinse, and cook them as per normal for a later meal. The Baker’s Brew cake underneath can be enjoyed as per normal!
