Those staying near Clementi MRT Station may be familiar with the old-school bakes from Balmoral Bakery, a humble bakery at Sunset Way that’s been around since 1965. Loved by Westies for their savoury pies and fluffy cakes, the bakery sells nostalgic bakes that are becoming less common these days.

Balmoral Bakery is located at the corner unit of the shophouses at Sunset Way Residence, standing out for its brick walls and tiled flooring. Perhaps this was inspired by the Balmoral Castle in Scotland, which can be spotted on the bakery’s storefront.

One of the most popular items on their menu is the triangle-shaped Chicken Samosa ($1.50), featuring a savoury potato and chicken filling enveloped in intricate layers of pastry sheets. Best eaten fresh out of the oven, this savoury pastry is said to be flaky and crispy, with hints of spiciness from the chicken curry.

The Chicken Pie ($1.80) is another customer favourite, comprising chunks of chicken, carrots, potatoes, and peas. While fans of the bakery love the chicken pie’s fragrant filling, they’ve noted that the size of the pie has become significantly smaller over the years. If you’re a big eater, opt for the beef version instead, as it’s said to be more filling but just as delicious.

Balmoral Bakery’s other signature bakes include the Egg Tart and Custard Tart, both priced at $1.50 per piece. The egg tarts here are known for their crumbly crust and runny centre, while the custard tarts are said to have a smooth filling that’s not too sweet, though a little artificial-tasting.

Another noteworthy mention is the Cream Horn ($1.50), which is said to have originated in Austria. The ones at Balmoral Bakery feature a cone-shaped pastry piped with buttercream and topped with a single cherry.

For something more unique, there’s the Napolean ($1.50), comprising layers of buttery puff pastry layered between sweet vanilla custard, as well as the Butterfly ($1.50), a soft sponge cake filled with whipped cream and topped with sugary white powder.

Alcohol-spiked treats are also available, such as the Rum Ball ($1.80), which resembles a cake pop without the stick. While the chocolate filling is said to be a tad overpowering, the rum’s aromatic notes become more discernable towards the end.

Those who don’t live near Sunset Way can also have these affordable bakes delivered to their home at a flat fee of $20.
