Cheap food around town to have after shopping
After a long day of walking around and shopping in town, you’d probably want to sit down and chill at a nice place with great and cheap food. I always end up in a fast food restaurant just because it’s really cheap and convenient. But once in a while, I’d like to have a decent meal too – without damaging my wallet any further after all those shopping. To help you guys out, I have rounded up 10 places with cheap food around town area!
1. M Seven Cafe

M Seven Cafe is a casual cafe situated at PoMo Mall, selling all-day breakfasts and pastas. They stepped up their affordable-food-game in town with their German Rosti with Cheesy Chicken Sausage ($10). It is a Swiss dish, with potatoes grated and fried into a patty shape. Replenish your energy with this crispy carb along with cheesy chicken sausages and a runny sunny side up. They also have German Rosti with Pan-fried Salmon ($10.50) if you’re not a fan of sausages.

End your day with a piping hot bowl of boat noodles with savoury and spicy beef broth and tender beef slices at Gu Thai Noodle Cafe. They are known for their hearty Beef Boat Noodles ($1.90/$7.90), which comes in a mini bowl or a regular boat-shaped bowl. You can choose your preferred level of spiciness depending on your liking. If you happen to get this, do note that the rice noodles soak up the broth really fast. Also, try out Tom Yum River Prawn Noodles ($7.80) for a bowl of sour and spicy goodness.

My personal favourite would be Encik Tan’s Wanton Noodle Set ($6). It is value-for-money and its quality and quantity are not compromised. Order a set at this halal-certified chain and you’ll get a big bowl of wanton noodles with slices of char siew chicken, a plate of fried wanton, and a bowl of wanton soup. If you don’t feel like having noodles, you can get their Chicken Cutlet Curry Rice ($4.30) – a plate of rice with chicken cutlet, fried egg, and veggies drenched in thick curry gravy.
4. Just Acia

Just Acia boasts a variety of rice and noodle set dishes and free-flow drinks and ice-cream. This gem is hidden at Dhoby Xchange, where not many notice its location. Get their Deep Fried Chicken Set ($9.90+) served with crispy deep-fried chicken, steamed Japanese rice, miso soup, and kimchi. One of the many crowd-favourites would be the Creamy Salted Egg Yolk Spaghetti with Crispy Chicken Set ($13.90+). It’s no shocker that they’re always flooded with customers.
5. Fish & Chicks
Fish & Chicks is my go-to place if I’m craving for Western food while I’m at Somerset. Their menu includes a variety of fish, chicken, and even lobster dishes. Get their classic Fish and Chips ($6.90) – fish fillet deep-fried to a golden brown crisp and served with two sides of your choice. If you want your gains, get their Black Pepper Chicken ($6.90) instead. This classic is grilled till slightly charred and drenched with black pepper sauce. Their dishes are all value-for-money and your wallet will thank you for that.
6. JTown Cafe

If you’re looking for some Indonesian street food, JTown Cafe specialises in it. This Muslim-owned cafe is known for their Bakmie Ayam ($6.50) – a common street food in Indonesia. Enjoy the handmade yellow noodles with deep-fried diced chicken and a drizzle of sweet soya sauce. For desserts, they have a famous street snack Martabak ($6.20) – pan-fried pancake with grounded peanuts, chocolate rice, and condensed milk. It is known to sell out very early so do call them and order in advance or ASAP once you’re there.

Their customers are in love with their Drunken Noodles ($7.90). It is not infused with alcohol as the name suggests, but instead, it is very spicy, herby, and umami-filled. Not forgetting their must-have Crispy Thai Wings ($6.90) which is bound to bind you into food coma with its crispy exterior and juicy meat.

Unlike regular nasi ayam penyet shops, Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut sells a duck version of the crispy chicken dish. Their Original Crispy Duck Rice ($9.90) is served on a huge plate consisting of crispy deep-fried duck with a generous amount kriuk (flour crumbs) and fiery house-made sambal. Or, you could also get their Grilled Duck Rice ($9.90) which is as good, or even better than the original. The duck meat is very tender and flavourful, and goes really well with the sambal manis provided.
