Crate Cafe Bali has affordable big breakfasts
Cafe hoppers in Canggu may find themselves spoilt for choice with the hundreds—if not thousands—of cafes scattered throughout the coastal neighbourhood. To narrow down our list of go-tos when I was in Bali, I asked our Airbnb host to recommend us a popular cafe in Canggu. Without any hesitation, he asked us to check out Crate Cafe, which is a 10-minute walk away from Warung Sika, one of my favourite warungs in Bali.
Crate Cafe is one of the most popular spots for big breakfasts and acai bowls in Canggu. It’s also known for its long queues, so be sure to come early to ensure you get a seat.
As you enter the open-air cafe, you’ll be greeted by the cafe’s unique and rustic decor, decked out in vintage crates, wooden tables, and a feature wall showcasing polaroid images of happy customers. Staying true to the relaxed vibes, the cafe also welcomes customers who arrive in beachwear and swimsuits.
During our visit, we were impressed with the affordable prices of the mains. Here, a big breakfast AKA Breakkie Plate, only costs IDR65K (~S$5.83) and features fluffy sourdough served with roasted tomatoes, spinach, avocado, and a sunny-side up. You can also pick bacon or smoked salmon for your choice of protein.
You get fresh avocado slices, which give the savoury dish a hint of creaminess. The sourdough also sports a crackly crust, with a slightly chewy dough.
As it was a hot day, we ordered the Hipstar (IDR65K/~S$5.83), a smoothie bowl aesthetically layered with acai, frozen bananas, chia, dragonfruit, shredded coconut, and mixed nuts.
The refreshing smoothie bowl was so huge that I had to share it with my colleague. Despite being a hearty bowl, the flavours were light and easy on the palate.
We ended our meal with a delectable cinnamon-spiced Carrot Cake (IDR35K/~S$3.14). This moist dessert was topped with buttery cream cheese icing and crushed walnuts.
In the coffee department, there are caffeinated options from IDR30K (~S$2.71) with the likes of Espresso, Macchiato, Piccolo, and Mocha. You can also refresh your tastebuds with their tropical local fresh juices, including Greenie (IDR40K/~S$3.62), which blends kiwi and apple, and the strawberry-infused Sal (IDR40K/~S$3.62), mixed with apple and lime.
