Knead Kopi is a home cafe serving kopi and bakes in Bukit Timah

In recent months, there have been a lot of home-based cafes popping up in different corners of Singapore. While most serve up trendy bakes, matcha drinks, and cafe-style coffee, Knead Kopi does it differently with their old-school offerings. Located in Bukit Timah, the popular home cafe is run by a couple who serve customers day and night, right in their front yard.

When we arrived at 10am, the front yard was already occupied by customers of all ages. Adorned with camping chairs and foldable tables, the outdoor, sheltered space exuded a warm vibe that quickly made us feel at home.

We started our home cafe experience with the classic Set One ($8.50), which is essentially your kaya toast set.

This comes with three pieces of baguette, homemade kaya, butter, two soft-boiled eggs, and a choice of drink. We got a cup of hot Kopi, which is priced at $1.80 a la carte.

We also got a hot Teh ($1.80) to ease our stomachs before eating! There are 12 drinks on the menu, including Milo Dinosaur ($3.30) for something sweet and rich, and a refreshing cup of Apple or Orange Juice ($3.50 each) for the little ones.

The creamy kaya leans slightly sweet and pairs pretty well with the thinly sliced, crispy baguette, though we would have preferred the classic white or brown bread instead for its toasty and nutty flavour.

Our favourite item was the Curry Chicken ($9.50), a newly launched item that’s available for the week. This hearty dish comprises sliced baguette and a creamy coconut curry sauce brimming with soft potato chunks and really tender chicken pieces.

We don’t know if the Curry Chicken will be part of their permanent menu, so try it while you still can.

For something lighter, the Egg Tart ($2.50) is a good choice; it’s one of the flakier egg tarts we’ve tried, with a buttery crust loaded with velvety smooth egg custard. We saw a couple of customers leaving with a box of these egg tarts, which shows just how popular they are.

At first blush, we thought the brownie on display was a typical chocolate dessert bar until we read the label: Mochi Brownies, priced at $5 each.

This fudgy brownie comes with a stretchy block of mochi at the bottom layer, which adds an interesting texture to the otherwise dense and cakey dessert.

Given the novel concept of having an old-school breakfast in someone’s front yard, our time at Knead Kopi was memorable, to say the least.
