Shukuu Izakaya has $5 donburi for a limited time only
Current inflation rates and GST increases mean dining in the CBD is starting to seriously hurt. Shukuu Izakaya, however, has got our backs, with a limited-time-only anti-inflation menu that has donburi bowls priced at just $5++.Â
Blink and you’ll miss it: the izakaya doesn’t even display the promotional menu up front, perhaps due to its overwhelming popularity.
On to the promotion: every weekday (except Monday), two selected donburi bowls are priced at $5++ each. If those two flavours aren’t up your alley, you can pick from four other rice bowls, priced at $14++ or $16++.
The Tori Soboro Don, for instance, goes for $5++ on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On other weekdays, it costs $14++.
This rice bowl comes with marinated minced chicken, edamame, and an onsen egg, piled atop short-grain rice.
Another $5++ rice bowl that’s also available on Tuesdays is Unagi Tama, which typically goes for $16++.
Here, generous slabs of teriyaki-glazed eel are joined by sweet tamago chunks, served on the same pearl rice.
Those who love sashimi can get their Negitoro for just $5++ on Wednesdays. Usually priced at $16++, this don spotlights minced tuna belly with tobiko and a raw quail egg for added creaminess.
Alternatively, visit on Fridays to enjoy the Buta Katsu Kuro Curry (U.P. $16++) at $5++.
This was our favourite don out of the four bowls we’d tried. The deep-fried pork cutlet, paired with the rich and savoury dark curry, made for a delicious TGIF meal.
If you don’t mind spending more, order their sides at just $2.50++ each! Options include Ramen Egg and Nasu Goma AKA eggplant with sesame sauce.
There’s also Miso Soup with Asari Clams if you want something comforting to complement your rice bowl.
Do note that this $5++ donburi deal is only available from Tuesday to Friday, 11:30am to 2pm. Last orders are taken by 1:30pm.
The Japanese restaurant is located along the bustling stretch of shophouses on Stanley Street, a mere four-minute walk from Telok Ayer MRT Station. Come lunchtime, seats—both indoor and outdoor—are filled up fast, so you’ll want to make a reservation to be safe.

Beyond their lunchtime deals, Shukuu Izakaya serves up a wide variety of sakes, best enjoyed alongside their kushiyaki menu that’s a staple at any Japanese izakaya. By night, the vibey space looks straight outta Shinjuku too, with its sake bottle display, paper lanterns, and graphic Japanese banners throughout. It’s a great pick for an after-work hang, or a TGIF celebration.
As mentioned, the current promo is limited time only, and likely available till mid-December, according to a brand rep. Depending on the response, the brand might go ahead and extend the promo, so do check them out if you want more affordable options for lunch in the CBD.
