Pure Soya Bean is a hawker stall in Toa Payoh with chendol and matcha soya milk
When we think of sweet treats in Toa Payoh, 68 Nonya Kueh and their huge ondeh ondeh, or the famous Folks & Stories bakery with their cheesecake cookies may come to mind first. But you may not have heard of Pure Soya Milk at Toa Payoh West Market & Food Centre which serves soya milk, beancurd, and grass jelly with a variety of unique toppings and flavours.Â
Famous Bakery Folks & Stories Opens Their Second Outlet In Toa Payoh
The stall’s Matcha Green Tea Soya Milk ($3.50) and Black Glutinous Rice Soya Milk ($3) are what most of their patrons love. Since the sugar levels were adjustable, we got them with less sugar.Â
Starting with the Matcha Green Tea Soya Milk, the bitter notes of the matcha came through as the drink was not too sweet. Though we liked the bittersweet combination, we found that it got a tad astringent towards the end.
Next, we really liked how the black glutinous rice in our second drink was chunky and chewy. There were sticky rice bits in every sip, creating an interesting flavour that reminded us of its popular local dessert cousin, pulut hitam.
We also ordered their Chendol Soya Milk ($3.50) because we thought it looked delicious. The stall owner did not hold back on the toppings as we could see that kernels of corn and green rice flour jellies filled up half the cup!Â
Other than soya milk, this stall also offers beancurd and grass jelly. Out of the lot, their Gula Melaka 3 Treasure Beancurd ($5), filled with red bean and gingko nuts, and drizzled in gula melaka, is sure to be a texture fest.Â
