We Tried A $18.80 Buffet At Shrimp Prawn Seafood’s New Hotpot Stall In Yishun

Walk along Boat Quay and you’ll chance upon Shrimp Prawn Seafood, an eatery that serves up some of the best Thai prawn vermicelli in the country. Now, the brand has made its way up North to serve up its signature dish and a whole lot more. This new Yishun outlet, named Shrimp Prawn Hotpot, offers a seafood-centric hotpot at really affordable prices.

Shrimp Prawn Hotpot has an exciting $18.80 Hotpot Buffet, which comes with free-flow crayfish, flower crab and more. And on Sundays for August 2025, Yishun residents can also enjoy a free lobster— just present one IC with “Yishun” in the address! You’ll get one lobster if you’re in a group of up to four, and two lobsters for five or more diners.

Given the excellent prices and freebies, we dropped by the stall to see what the buffet is like.

Food at Shrimp Prawn Hotpot

Our hotpot, which comes with a barbecue grill, had two soup bases. The first of these was the Famous SPS Tom Yum, which was spicy, sour, savoury, and even a little sweet. A sip of it left a nice lingering burn in the mouth, and many of the ingredients went well with it. But it was the other soup, the Signature Shark Collagen, that really impressed. Chef Alvin Tai claims this is the “world’s first shark collagen hotpot”!

Made with shark cartilage, dried scallops, fish maw, Jinhua ham and more, this broth was absolutely packed with umami. Even before adding ingredients to the soup, it was already so flavourful that we could drink it on its own! And thanks to the collagen, there was also a nice creaminess to the broth that became more pronounced as it continued to boil.

However, that initial richness meant that as more ingredients were added to the mix, the soup got saltier and saltier to the point where it was impossible not to feel jelak. A lighter, more watered-down stock for the top-ups might’ve helped balance things out.

The buffet comes with a range of seafood, meats, vegetables and more, all of which you can get from a giant refrigerator right outside the stall. We’ll focus on some of the standouts, starting with the crayfish.

I find that crayfish at cheap buffets tend to be pitifully small and lacking in meat, but that wasn’t the case here. Each crayfish was full of fresh, plump meat. Best of all, you can help yourself to as much as you want!

You can also get unlimited squid, which are conveniently skewered for easy grilling.

Once grilled till crispy on the outside, we found that the squid went perfectly with the house-made Thai chilli sauce, which really packed a spicy punch.

The free-flow flower crabs were a little smaller in the meat department. If you don’t want to skim on your crabs, however, be sure to order the a la carte Mud Crab ($38), a 400-500g crustacean with sizeable claws and fresh, sweet meat.

Other a la carte crustaceans you might want to consider include the Tiger Prawn Skewer ($1.30), Snow Crab Leg ($7.80), Boston Lobster ($38) and more. If even the tiger prawn isn’t enough for you, go for the Giant Scampi Prawn (from $15.80). This monstrously-sized sea creature was wonderfully fresh, succulent, and packed with creamy roe.

You can get unlimited servings of sliced pork and beef, too, which can either be grilled or simmered in your soup of choice. Considering the gamut of great seafood on offer, the buffet meat seemed lacklustre by comparison. If you have more to spend, consider upgrading to the premium Angus Beef Short ($5.80), AUS Kobe Wagyu Beef ($8.80) and more.

Those on a tighter budget can still enjoy a decent meal with the Pineapple Fried Rice ($2). Pair it with a bowl of Tom Yum Soup for an additional $0.50!

Ambience at Shrimp Prawn Hotpot

You’ll find Shrimp Prawn Hotpot in a Yishun estate’s Kimly Coffeeshop. The space itself is well-furnished as far as coffeeshops go, with decent ventilation and lighting throughout. There’s also a decent variety of stalls, offering the likes of kway chap, roast meat, and Western food.

Shrimp Prawn Hotpot is a 16-minute walk from Yishun MRT Station.
