Dover food gems for the Westies
Dover is an area I got familiar with during my primary and secondary school days. Searching for good food in the vicinity before every CCA training is a routine of mine and my teammates. After doing so for years, I’ve managed to collate a list of Dover food places worth going to!
1. Grill Werkz

Grill Werkz is an affordable Western stall offering a variety of grilled meats under $20. For both their Norway Grill Salmon ($12.80) and New Zealand Ribeye Steak ($19.80), the meat on each dish is grilled till they produce a slight char. One item on the menu that my teammates and I never fail to order is the Combo Mixed Grill ($15.80). It is great for sharing as it contains a wide variety, including pork chop, steak, ham, sausages, egg, and potato wedges.

2. Erich’s Wuerstelstand

Those who often walk past German sausage kiosk Erich’s Wuerstelstand in Chinatown might notice that it is no longer there anymore. It has since shifted over to a coffeeshop in Dover. A sausage that is well-loved by customers is the Kaesekrainer ($4) – a smoked pork sausage filled with cheese. That itself isn’t enough if you’re heading down, as their Meatloaf Sandwich ($5) is also a must-eat!

3. Wakon Ramen
Housed under the same roof as the previous two stalls is Wakon Ramen. Their popular Hakata Ramen ($6.50) consists of a thick creamy white broth made by boiling pork bones for hours. Another of their signatures is the Volcano Seafood Ramen ($9.90) where you get to choose your spice level from less spicy to extra spicy. If spicy food is your thing, go for the extra spicy!

4. XO Fish Head Bee Hoon

Those residing in Dover would definitely have paid a visit to XO Fish Head Bee Hoon at least once. The fragrant milky broth of their Fish Head Bee Hoon ($7) is what keeps regulars coming back for more. Along with a generous number of fish slices, this dish is a must-try! Other dishes such as Prawn Rolls ($12) and Prawn Paste Chicken ($10) are also popular among regulars as well.

5. Uncle Louis Hainanese Chicken Rice

It is not only XO Fish Head Bee Hoon that garners a long queue; Uncle Louis Hainanese Chicken Rice, which is a few stalls down at the same coffeeshop, does too. I remember having their Steamed Chicken Rice ($3) – the oily chicken rice was shining, with several pieces of chopped up chicken laid neatly on top of it. Their tangy chilli gave the entire dish an extra oomph.
