Redhill food spots worth travelling for
Nestled in the midst of towering HDB flats, Redhill is uncharted territory to many, where those who don’t stay in the area wouldn’t be aware of the trove of cheap and good food in the area. Today, we bring you some of the best Redhill food gems in the area that are worth travelling down for!Â
1. Soon Li Yong Tau Foo

Even at 1am, Soon Li Yong Tau Foo is bustling with people. But if you don’t mind standing in line, their hearty bowls of yong tau foo make for the perfect supper. This stall is run by an old couple who decided to run the stall to pass some time, so do close one eye on their actual operating hours, as they tend to take time to open the stall.Â
Their Yong Tau Foo (from $7) features a tantalising soup base that is made from simmering fried ikan billis and pork. Tastewise, it is savoury with a peppery punch. Remember to add vegetables, ikan billis and chilli into your pot of soup for added umami and spice.
Address: 115 Bukit Merah View, #01-78, Bukit Merah View Market & Hawker Centre, Singapore 151115

2. Ye Shang Hai Teochew Porridge

Nothing beats having a comforting bowl of white porridge paired with simple, yet scrumptious dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. At Ye Shang Hai Teochew Porridge, you will not get bored of this simple fare given the stall’s wide range of dishes. With over 50 dishes to choose from, you can get a portion of vegetable and meat for only $2.20, while a meal consisting of two vegetables and two meats adds up to an affordable $3.30.Â
We recommend opting for the Braised Pork Belly or the Teochew Braised Duck, where you will get tender, meaty pieces of pork or duck cooked in a fragrant braised sauce—the perfect complement to the porridge. Their famous Fried Chicken Feet also adds an extra crunch and flavour to your meal.Â

3. Rong Xing La Mian Xiao Long Bao

One of the more underrated dim sum stalls around, Rong Xing La Mian Xiao Long Bao is the place to go to when your dim sum cravings hit. At this humble stall, expect Din Tai Fung standard Xiao Long Bao at only a fraction of its price. At just $4.50 a basket, you will get eight xiao long bao encased in a thin, glistening dumpling skin. Break into it for a meaty broth mixed with a fresh ball of cooked minced meat. We also recommend their Dan Dan Mian ($4), where you will get a generous portion of minced meat and peanuts mixed with hand-pulled noodles, and their Red Bean Pancake ($3.80) for a sweet finish to your meal.Â

4. Yan Fried Bee Hoon and Chicken Wings

Yan Fried Bee Hoon bears the stamp of approval from our very own Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who was spotted queuing up for some cheap, no-frills fried chicken wings. Here, a plate of bee hoon costs only $0.60, while their famed chicken wings go at $1.30 a pop. The bee hoon is decent—not clumpy or leaving a greasy trail, while the wings are freshly fried, well marinated, and crunchy.Â

For $2.50 a bowl, you will get a very decent portion of lor mee mixed with fishcake, wu xiang, and a thick, savoury and flavourful gravy that is not too starchy to stomach. The owners at 71 Lor Mee also mix in little bits of pork fat into the gravy, giving the lor mee a unique crunch.Â

6. Fu Ming Cooked Food Carrot Cake

Fu Ming Cooked Food is best known for their large chunks of soft, flavourful radish cakes. What’s great about this stall is that they are one of the few hawkers left that still steam their own carrot cake, rather than rely on factory-made ones. From $3 a plate, you can opt for a crispy, wok hei white carrot cake, or the darker version, where the sweet black sauce is added twice while frying, giving it a deeper, more robust taste.Â

7. Hock Shun Traditional Homemade Curry
Hock Shun Traditional Homemade Curry dishes out addictive curries in claypots to retain the heat and flavour of the dish. The Claypot Curry Chicken Wings ($4) comes with two chicken wings, potatoes, and a choice of rice or bread. Expect a mild, spicy flavour that complements the rich, coconut milk from the curry. We recommend the Claypot Fish Curry ($5.50), which comes with a slightly darker, reddish hue. The fish that comes with the flavourful assam curry is soft, flaky, and not overcooked.Â

8. The Bakery Chef

If you haven’t tried The Bakery’s Chef’s famous lava toasts, you’re missing out on a real sweet treat. Their thick Lava Toast ($14.80) features a generous filling of Matcha, Salted Egg, or Nutella, along with a scoop of vanilla or matcha ice-cream on the side. Green tea fans will love the Charcoal Toast with Matcha Ice-Cream and filling, where you are rewarded with a generous flow of molten matcha. The toast is light and fluffy, and goes well with the decadent matcha that has just the right amount of intensity and sweetness. Share it with a friend though, as the portion is quite big for a post-lunch treat.Â

We recommend their Truffle Eggs Mushroom ($13.90), where you’ll get simple, no frills eggs that are perfectly scrambled with creamy miso and truffle oil. A variety of mushrooms are also thrown into the mix, giving an interesting take to an otherwise normal toast.Â
