Ah Five Hainanese Chicken Rice in Ang Mo Kio

You may have heard of Five Star Chicken Rice, one of Singapore’s most popular chicken rice stalls, which was founded by Mr Lee Tai Keng more than 60 years ago. Just recently, his children, Natalie and Lex, decided to carry on his legacy with Ah Five Hainanese Chicken Rice, located in Ang Mo Kio.

The young hawkers learned how to master their father’s techniques for perfectly cooked poached chicken before they started Ah Five Hainanese Chicken Rice. They also named the stall after their father, who was the fifth-born in his family.

The highlight of the menu at Ah Five Hainanese Chicken Rice has to be their Special Chicken Fried Rice ($7), which stars slices of their silky poached chicken atop fried rice. Top up $1 to get a sunny-side-up to complete the meal! The egg fried rice is said to be full of wok hei, and has diced prawn and minced pork in the mix too.

The stall uses kampung chicken, which is free-ranging. Unlike the chicken you usually get, these are leaner, with firmer meat. Choose from the 1 Person Set ($5), or a 2 Person Set ($10) when you dine here, which gets you generous servings of chicken and mounds of their mildly fragranced rice.

Otherwise, you can order a Half Chicken ($15) or Whole Chicken ($30) with the flavoured rice, or even porridge, which are priced at $1 a portion.

A regular plate of Chicken Rice is priced at $5, and you can upgrade to Drumsticks Rice for an extra dollar.

Alternatively, there’s also Shredded Chicken Porridge ($3), which is most popular during breakfast hours.
