Alchemist At The Mill: Industrial Cafe With Great Coffee In A Gothic Building

10th April 2023

Alchemist at The Mill is a cafe in a gothic building in Bukit Merah

Cafe-hopping never seems to go out of trend, as evidenced by the countless new concepts that endlessly pop up ever so oftenโ€”most recently we’ve seen Takagi Coffee, Ceres Haus, and Hellu Coffee. If you’re one who lives for the ‘gram, here’s an oldie but no less of a goldie: Alchemist at The Mill.

Why I say it’s for the ‘gram is because of Alchemist at The Mill’s highly unique aestheticโ€”think Atlas Bar at Parkview Square, or Gotham City a la Batman. This branch of the Alchemist chain of cafes is the only one that’s housed within a gothic-style building, complete with brooding dark walls, chandeliers, and all that.

If the Bukit Merah building bears similarities to Parkview Square, that’s because it was designed by the same brains.

The ceilings here are a soaring 6m high, with windows that reach almost half that, so there’s plenty of natural light cutting through the dark colours.

But of course, a cafe is not just about the ambience. Alchemist first started out as a little coffee joint five years ago, dedicated to serving a quality cuppa Joe, and that still stands today. The specialty coffee cafe roasts their own beans, which are also available for sale online.

Visit any of their cafes, and you can sip on Espresso ($3.50), White ($5.50), or even Mocha ($6), where you can choose between a house or seasonal blend, or single origin beans. Otherwise, they’ve got filter coffees, which you can choose in-store too.

Unlike at their other stores, Alchemist at The Mill has a smaller selection of pastries, though there are both savoury and sweet ones on offer.

Here, you’ll find the classic Butter Croissant ($4) alongside Pain au Chocolat ($4.50) and Almond Croissant ($4.50), plus a Pistachio Raspberry Danish ($5.50) and Mushroom Brie Danish ($5.50) that stars both brie and ricotta with mushrooms and truffle paste.

Other new cafes to check out include Cafe Limonci, a Tai Seng gem that looks like an atas furniture stall. Otherwise, FiftyFive Coffee Bar in Tanjong Pagar has strawberry pipago and miso honey lattes.
