From Ye Lai Xiang Cheng Tng’s 83-year-old recipe to cheap bak kut teh and fish soup at Xian Jin Mixed Vegetable Rice, we can always depend on Bedok Food Centre to consistently have great food options. Adding to the list is Bamboo Nasi Rendang, which makes their nasi rendang by steaming rice in bamboo tubes!

This cooking method reminded us of Paradise Biryani’s version of briyani that’s cooked in bamboo. Basmati rice and meat are wrapped in daun lerek AKA leaves from a lerek tree for a unique aroma, before being stuffed in bamboo tubes to be steamed for two to three hours. The rice is then served freshly removed from the bamboo tube. For folks who prefer to eat at home, the rice will be wrapped in a foil to preserve its heat.

Their Nasi Rendang Daging with Bamboo ($7) is the most popular dish here. The rice is steamed with marinated beef and also comes with a small bowl of curry on the side. Frequent customers love their extra flavourful rice as it is imparted with the fragrant rendang marinade and beef juices. This dish sells out fast, so be sure to visit early to try it!

Another famous dish on the menu is the Nasi Rendang Rusuk Dalam Bamboo ($10), steamed with a piece of beef rib. Customers like that their ribs are so well-cooked that they fall off the bone, and the fatty layers of the ribs also make the rice extra buttery!

If beef is not your thing, get the Nasi Rendang Ayam Dalam Bamboo ($6) which is steamed with chicken instead! This dish also comes with curry on the side, which goes well with the succulent piece of drumstick.
