50% off on signature roast bowls at Funan’s Crystal Jade GO
Crystal Jade GO is having an opening promotion, where you can get 50% off their Signature Roast Bowls ($8.80) from now till 13 October 2019.
Setting up its first outlet at United Square earlier this year, Crystal Jade GO is a new quick-service concept from the Crystal Jade group that features individual portions and affordable items from the parent restaurant’s wide menu. They have since expanded to several outlets with the newest one at Funan.
You can customise the roast bowls any way you want, down to the type of meat, carb, and sauce.
Three types of meat are available: braised superior soya sauce chicken, honey roasted BBQ pork, and roasted duck (+$1). You can then choose from a selection of spinach noodles (+$0.50), white rice, or egg noodles. Lastly, take your pick from the trio of sauces: traditional soya sauce, ma la sauce, or truffle soya sauce (+$0.80).
Our favourite combination was the roasted duck with spinach noodles and truffle soya sauce. The duck was succulent and tender, with a nice layer of fats hidden beneath the skin.
The eye-catching spinach noodles tasted as great as they looked. They had a pleasant springiness that made it incredibly addictive to slurp up. All the flavours were then given an added boost with the umami-laced truffle soya sauce. It somehow gave everything in this dish a gentle breath of earthy truffle flavour.
Those who prefer something lighter on their palates will probably like the braised superior soya sauce chicken with egg noodles and traditional soya sauce. The egg noodles you’ll find here are consistent to the ones at the main Crystal Jade Hong Kong Kitchen outlets. These thin noodles have a slightly alkaline taste and firm mouthfeel to them.
The chicken is slathered with a tasty soya sauce, which didn’t overpower this dish with overly salty tones.
Rice options are also available and we got a chance to try their honey roasted BBQ pork with white rice that’s drenched in an interesting ma la sauce.
The char siew was cut into huge chunks, making it great to chew on them. I was a little disappointed that they were missing the charred flavour that’s characteristically found in this cult favourite. However, the ma la sauce more than made up for it. It wasn’t overly spicy but packed a slight tongue-numbing kick that made us want to reach out for more.
You’ll also find classic dim sum dishes such as Steamed BBQ Pork Bun ($5.40 for three pieces) and Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun ($5.70 for three pieces) here.
An interesting variant of chee cheong fun is their Traditional HK Rice Roll With HK Style Seafood & Sesame Sauce ($4.80). It comes with the usual silky soft sheets of steamed rice rolls that are smeared in a sweet nutty sauce, reminding us of peanut butter.
Located on the second floor of Funan and cheerfully decorated with flashing neon lights, this eye-catching kiosk would be difficult to miss. There aren’t plenty of seats, so you might want to head down early during busy periods or even consider taking your food away.
The 50% off signature roast bowls promotion is only valid from now till 13 October 2019, so be sure to get them ASAP!
