Get your fix of old-school cakes and pastries at halal bakery Happy Oven‘s new outlet in Hougang. The popular family-run bakery, which first opened in Beo Crescent, is most known for their wide selection of freshly baked cakes in traditional flavours.

There’s their best-selling Ondeh Ondeh Roll, which goes for just $1.40 a pop. This cake features a strikingly green pandan-spiked sponge with gula melaka-soaked coconut shavings and buttercream in the middle, topped with fresh coconut flakes on top.
Alternatively, go for the Gula Melaka Roll or the Pandan Kaya Cake, affordably priced at $1.40 and $1Â respectively.

Another classic flavour worth trying is the Chendol Cake ($1.40), an iteration of everyone’s favourite icy dessert. You get soft pandan sponge with a thick and rich gula melaka centre, topped with a creamy coconut layer with red beans and chendol jelly.

Don’t miss the Classic Cream Puffs ($1.40) too, which are are a blast from the past. The choux pastry is said to be light, and filled with Happy Oven’s signature house-made custard cream for the perfect bite.

Fans of old-school cakes must also try their Chocolate Boat Cake ($2), a childhood classic comprising layers of chocolate sponge cake packed with chocolate cream, and generously coated with chocolate vermicelli.

Happy Oven Hougang opens from 5am daily, so you can get your dose of sweet treats for brekkie if you’re an early riser. Online reviews state that they’ve been selling out before their stipulated closing time of 3pm, so be sure to head down earlier to snag some bakes! Alternatively, beat the queue and order online.
