Kallang Wave Mall: Where To Eat After Visiting The Singapore Sports Hub

26th February 2020

Food At Kallang Wave Mall

A stone’s throw away from the nearby Singapore Sports Hub, Kallang Wave Mall is frequented by avid sportsmen and leisure shoppers alike. Its name comes from the iconic “Kallang Wave” celebration that jubilant Singapore football supporters performed in unison at the old National stadium. It’s truly a symbol of unity and fierce Singaporean pride.

Being an athlete, I train several times a week at the Singapore Sports Hub and often head to Kallang Wave Mall after a gruelling training session for my meals. You can say that I know my way around there pretty well. This iconic mall offers a myriad of food options that will satisfy the cravings of the young to old folks alike.

Restaurants at Kallang Wave Mall

Despite Kallang Wave Mall’s small size, the restaurants here offer many kinds of cuisine from local to Western and Japanese. The restaurants are all located on the first and second floor, with some from the former offering you a choice to dine al fresco.

1. A-One Claypot House

Kallang Wave Mall-A-One Claypot House PorridgeImage credit: @foodino.sg

A-One Claypot House dishes out mouthwatering Chinese cuisine in a homely setting. The chain restaurant is famous for their claypot porridge. Their porridge is not too watery, and is smooth and creamy. Try their Premium Dried Scallop Porridge with Minced Meat ($11.90++). The minced meat and different eggs mix well to give a wonderful flavour to the porridge. The Shrimp Fried Rice with Ebiko ($14.90++) comes lightly perfumed with a touch of wok hei and the store is quite generous with the shrimps as well.

12. Old Street Bak Kut Teh

For a piping hot bowl of bak kut teh, check out Old Street Bak Kut Teh. They are the pioneers of the Dry Bak Kut Teh ($7++ for small). The dish exudes a fragrant aroma, and the gravy is considerably thicker and more savoury as compared to the traditional soup bak kut teh. We recommend eating this dish with white rice, as its flavours might get too overwhelming if you eat it on its own.

Lovers of the Singapore version of bak kut teh should get the delightfully peppery Pork Ribs Soup ($6++ for small). The broth’s intense peppery taste is finished off with savoury and garlicky undertones. The tender pork comes off the bone easily, and the slight sweetness of the pork fat combines beautifully with the fragrant broth. This bowl is sure to satisfy any bak kut teh lover’s taste buds.

As someone who’s been eating OLDTOWN White Coffee’s comforting renditions of Malaysian food since young, it was nice to know they have an outlet in Kallang Wave Mall. Get a taste of their hearty plate of Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken ($9.30++). A single whiff of the fragrant coconut rice is enough to make me salivate. The exterior of the chicken is crispy, and the meat inside is tender. End off the meal with a refreshing bowl of Chendol ($4.30++). The sweetness of the gula melaka syrup, the savouriness of the red beans, and the comforting coolness of the shaved ice are a welcomed treat, especially on a sweltering afternoon.

Known for their roast chicken and duck confit, Poulet serves up affordable and tasty French food. Their Roast Chicken with Mushroom Chardonnay Sauce ($15.90++ for half) is a fan-favourite, and for good reason. It’s prepared with a myriad of herbs and roasted beautifully to a delightful brown colour. One could smell its fragrant aroma even before it’s brought out of the kitchen. The chicken meat easily comes off the bone and is full of juices even after the long cooking process. I would also recommend their Truffle Mashed Potato ($5.90++). The luscious mashed potatoes are nicely paired with earthy black truffles to create a pleasant marriage of earthy and rich flavours.

The meat sauce provides a nice depth of flavour to the sweet pork belly, without being too greasy.

They also serve comforting bowls of Braised Beef Noodles Soup ($11.90++). The beef slices are especially delicate and tender. The fat is rendered extremely well in the beef, which gives it a smooth and slightly chewy texture. The soup is fragrant, and the beefy flavour is evident with each spoonful.

Having been a frequent patron of Yu Kee Specialities since I was growing up, their Duck Rice ($4.50) has a special place in my heart. Each piece of duck meat is juicy, with strong meaty flavour. The fatty duck skin coats each piece of meat, giving the duck some richness. The grains are fragrant, and it goes well with the slightly herbaceous gravy.

19. 13 Stages

Kallang Wave Mall-13 Stages Chicken

Opened by celebrity Mark Lee and two of his close friends, 13 Stages serves seven different flavours of chicken rice. Since chicken breasts might be perceived as too dry and tough by some, the restaurant only serves steamed chicken thighs.

Their Samsui Chicken ($8.90++) is a popular favourite and features tender chicken leg that’s marinated with ginger and other aromatic spices.

Mala has been the rage for a while now, and it’s no surprise that their Mala Chicken ($8.90++) has gotten a lot of attention from diners. The Sichuan spices used in this fiery concoction kick in slowly, and linger on at the back of your throat.

With a whopping 19 outlets, Encik Tan is a familiar sight in Singapore malls. Its very first outlet happens to be the one in Kallang Wave Mall! They serve up tantalising halal local and Western food at extremely affordable prices. For curry rice lovers, their Hainanese Curry Rice with Chicken Cutlet ($4.30) is a must try. The chicken cutlet is shockingly crispy, yet the meat inside is tender. I also like how the slight sweetness of the cabbage balances out the spiciness of the rich curry. It’s accompanied by a runny egg which makes the dish all the more tasty. If you’re looking for noodles, try their Wanton Noodles ($4). The springy noodles have a good bounce to them and go well with the crunchy deep-fried wontons.

21. Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen

Kallang Wave Mall-Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen chicken

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is no stranger to Singapore’s fried chicken scene. Their Cajun Fried Chicken Combo ($7.90 for two pieces) comes in two spice flavours, mild or spicy. Marinated with a ton of spices, the chicken’s crispy skin boast piquant flavours. The meat is not dry, but juicy and flavourful.

For fish lovers, check out their Cajun Fish Combo ($7.90 for two pieces). It’s marinated with the same spices as their signature Cajun chicken. The slightly sweet fish meat melts in your mouth, and is soft and tender.

Each combo comes with a delicious buttermilk biscuit, and a signature side, which includes creamy mashed potatoes, refreshing coleslaw, crispy Cajun fries and fragrant garlic rice.

Their buttermilk biscuit’s slight saltiness and milky sweetness make for a pleasant savoury snack to go along with your fried chicken. Try dipping it into the mashed potatoes gravy for an extra creamy treat.

Serving dairy free bowls and shakes with frozen fruits, GFI Superfruit Bowls & Shakes is the place to be for health junkies. As the name GFI suggests, it’s a guilt-free indulgence.

My favourite bowl here is the Cocoa Almond Fudge ($6.90). Made entirely from roasted almonds, the almond butter is smooth and luscious. The sweet and slightly bitter cocoa goes really nicely with the savoury banana slices and refreshing berries. The rich maple syrup is the icing on the cake, and adds a pleasant touch of sweetness to the fruit bowl.

Their Mango Loco ($6.90) shake is refreshingly good. The nuttiness of the coconut water, the sweet mangoes, and the acidic pineapples balance each other out very well.

Beef is a meat that’s rarely used in a nasi lemak dish, which makes their Beef Rendang Nasi Lemak ($7.90) a must-get. The fragrant rendang is paired with juicy chunks of succulent beef, giving an intense smokiness.
