Skip the beaches of Bali and head to Ubud the next time you’re there for some soul-searching—the inland destination is known for its terraced paddies, gorgeous mountainside resorts, sacred monkey forest, and just as much good food as the rest of this island retreat. If you’ve made Ubud your base for exploration, there are a ton of cafes to check out, including Lazy Cats Cafe, a space that’s a cafe, bar, gallery, and restaurant.

You’d be forgiven if you thought Lazy Cats Cafe wasn’t found in Bali; the space was designed by German architect Alexis Dornier, with an eclectic mix of art, vintage furniture, and greenery. Skylights on the high, sloped roof, as well as a wide open balcony and large mirror, ensure the space is fully lit, and ultra conducive even for digital nomads.

Meat lovers be warned: this hippy cafe only serves a vegetarian menu, starring locally grown produce. Don’t let that put you off, however, because the fare is no less tasty and satisfying than their meaty peers.

Go for the 3 Tapas Set (IDR60/~$5.41), where you get to choose three of six options on the tapas menu. One of these is Rosemary Potatoes, which comes with an appetising, tomato-based dip on the side.

We also ordered ourselves a Pizza Panini, topped with mushrooms, rucola, black olives, green paprika, and sauteed onions on a tomato paste base. It’s popped in the oven with cheese to finish.

Our third choice was Melting Pot, which got us a creamy bowl of mushrooms with cheese, olives, and coriander, served as a dip alongside quarters of pita bread. Besides these, you could also opt for Sauted Mushrooms, Veggie Lasagne, or Canape Avocado Puree.

For more substantial eats, Lazy Cats Cafe has a comprehensive menu of brunch bowls, breakfast plates, burgers and more, but we chose to go with a Cheeseadilla (IDR65/~$5.86)—stuffed with peppers, red onions, corn, chilli flakes, and mozzarella.
