In a time where new cafes pop up ever so often, there’s a little one near Chinatown, just three minutes away from Maxwell MRT Station, that’s been drawing the crowds since they opened. Maxi Coffee Bar is their name, and you might have spotted them for their minimalist, blue aesthetic on any jaunt up Ann Siang Hill.

Most of the seats at Maxi Coffee Bar are along the walkway outside the cafe, with just a small handful within the shop. This means the cafe gets pretty crowded, especially on weekends, so be prepared to wait or opt for a takeaway.

The most popular item on the menu is their Iced Cereal Milk Latte ($7.50), made with Maxi Coffee Bar’s very own cereal milk. This also features in their Cereal Milk Cold Brew ($8.50), if you’re up for something different from the regular Black ($6.50) or White ($7.50) cold brews.

Other signature drinks here include The Dirty ($7.50), where cold brew meets chai latte, and the E&T ($9) AKA espresso and tonic for a caffeinated take on good ol’ fashioned gin and tonic. There’s even a Housemade Cola ($6.50), a concoction of house-made secret sauce and soda water.

The drinks aren’t all there is to look forward to; there’s Miso PB&J ($5.50), where soft, toasted milk buns sandwich a house-made miso peanut butter, and jam. For something more classic, the Kaya Butter ($4.80) option comes with house-made kaya!

If you’re looking for a more substantial bite, consider their Tuna Melt ($14), which won over our anti-fish-eating colleague with its well-balanced flavours, paired with melty cheddar and soft milk bread.

For more classic options, there’s Beef Pastrami ($15.50), Mortadella Cheese ($15), and Eggplant Parm ($14) as grilled cheese sandwiches on sourdough!

For a sweet bite, check out Mama Lum’s Banana Bread ($5) that’s popped on the grill so it’s toasty and lightly crusty. They’ve also got Sea Salt Dark Chocolate Brownie ($3.50) and Brown Butter Choco Chip Pecan Cookie ($5.50), as well as Madeleines ($12 for five) too.

For the serious coffee drinkers among us, we’ve got a list of coffee cafes for you to check out. If you’re into the new players on the scene, check out our review of the IG-famous cafe, The Glasshouse!
