Onigiri Planet has unique rice balls at Bukit Panjang
Onigiri sandwich, also known as onigirazu, is a snack that originated in Okinawa, Japan. Essentially a flatter version of the classic rice ball, onigirazu can be filled with more unorthodox ingredients. Case in point: Onigiri Planet, a stall in basement two of Hillion Mall that has all kinds of inventive onigirazu snacks.
Hailing from Taiwan, the Onigiri Planet brand has close to 50 outlets in its home country, Hong Kong, and Macau. Its recent opening here in Singapore has already turned some heads, in part due to its enticing opening promo: if you buy one onigiri, you can get the second for just $1. That’s a great deal if one onigiri isn’t enough to fill you up.
One of the stall’s most exciting renditions is the Grilled Mentaiko Scallop ($6.90). Sandwiched between a bed of fluffy rice and seaweed sheets are chewy, smoky imitation scallops that have been deep-fried. This snack is paired with the umami and creaminess of mentaiko mayo.
Another interesting dish to check out here is the Peanut Butter Katsu ($6.90). Hot, crispy, and juicy chicken katsu is paired with the sweet-savoury combination of peanut butter. If you’ve ever wondered what Japanese food would taste like with peanut butter, this is a decent example of it.
The Kimchi Chicken ($6.90) is another onigiri that introduces flavours from another cuisine. I am talking, of course, about sour, tangy kimchi that’s paired up with bulgogi chicken. You also get a fluffy omelette stacked in between.
