Mention Alexandra Food Village, and ang ku kueh isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. You might think of zi char institution Keng Eng Kee perhaps, or the famous Ah Seng Durian’s Durian Lab cafe that’s nearby.

Here’s another blip on your Bukit Merah radar to pay attention to: Poh Cheu Soon Kueh And Ang Ku Kueh, a third-generation maker of ang ku kueh and soon kueh, located just across the street from Keng Eng Kee.

With its bright purple and yellow signboard, this unassuming stall occupies a corner stall in a coffee shop along Bukit Merah Lane 1. They’re known for their unique, modern take on ang ku kueh, offering a whopping 12 different flavours of the traditional kueh.

You’ll still be able to get your ang ku kueh ($1.10) in classic flavours like peanut and green bean, but it’s the new-age flavours that have caught the attention of Poh Cheu’s more contemporary customers.

The multi-flavoured ang ku kueh come in various attractive colours to match the generous fillings within. These fillings include durian, green tea, mango, yam, and even coffee!

Besides ang ku kueh, they also make a number of other traditional Teochew kueh like soon kueh ($1), peng kueh ($1.30) and abacus seeds (from $2.30). Their glutinous rice (from $1.80) is supposed to be good too.

Everything at Poh Cheu Soon Kueh And Ang Ku Kueh is still made from scratch daily by the family, so you can be assured of the quality control here. There’s no pork or lard used in the food here too.
