The French Pastry in Tanjong Pagar has orh nee pastries
Orh nee is known as a traditional Teochew snack, but it has also become a popular dessert flavour featured in several modern cafes, such as Whisking Bakes and Cafe Lilac. Located seven minutes away on foot from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station is The French Pastry, a bakery that has jumped on the bandwagon with their gorgeous selection of orh nee pastries.Â

The French Pastry started out as a home-based business in 2020, and it was only two years after that they opened a physical store in Tanjong Pagar. This bakery specialises in local flavours, including pandan, and pulut hitam, but they are best known for their taro-infused desserts.

Their Orh Nee Petite Gateaux Box ($30) is touted to be the most popular choice among patrons. Each box comprises four orh nee pastries: Signature Orh Nee Mille Crepes, Orh Nee Salted Egg Choux Puff, Orh Nee Cheese Tart, and Orh Nee Mochi Souffle Roll.

One of their most beautiful creations is the Orh Nee Salted Egg Choux Puff, which features an airy puff with a crunchy choux shell made of purple yam cookie, then stuffed with orh nee and salted egg lava custard. If you love textured desserts that combine orh nee and salted egg, this dessert will surely turn your crank.

Another crowd favourite is their Orh Nee Mochi Souffle Roll, which boasts a fluffy sponge cake packed with orh nee cream and milk mochi cubes. Ginko nuts, more yam cream, and mochi cubes are the finishing touches to this cake.

There’s also the Signature Orh Nee Mille Crepes, which you get a slice of if you order their gateaux box. It’s also available as a whole cake for $45. You’ll find a generous amount of taro cream in between the purple yam crepe layers, finished with candied ginko nuts and roasted pumpkin cream.Â

Otherwise, try the Orh Nee Lava Chiffon ($28)Â for something more special. This IG-worthy cake features a light and fluffy yam-infused chiffon sponge topped with a creamy taro lava.

Aside from their signature orh nee desserts, a unique cake that caught our eye was the Pandan Avocado Gateau ($50). This dessert features an interesting combination of pandan-infused sponge cake with layers of avocado cream and mascarpone mousse within. It’s then wrapped in a crepe and piped with pandan coconut cream on top.Â
