If you live in the Dawson-Queenstown neighbourhood, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a new cafe on your doorstep: Urban Folks, a small Aussie-style spot that’s just opened in the all-new Margaret Market.

Inspired by her time studying in Melbourne, where she fell in love with the cafe culture, Vernetta Fong decided to bring her favourite jaffles—stuffed toasties with the sides sealed shut—back home to Singapore.

They’ve got four jaffles on the menu: three savouries, priced at $9.80 each, and Nut-Tellin’Ya ($7), a sweet option to which you can add a scoop of ice cream for $1.50.

We went for Curry-San, stuffed with house-made Japanese beef curry, caramelised onions, and a house blend of cheese. You could also opt for Eggsquisite, sandwiching Asian chilli eggs, chicken Spam and cheese, or Kimcheese, filled with kimchi, gochujang aioli, and cheese.

We loved Urban Folks’ Beef Bomb ($15) sammie, AKA sandwich, paired with tapioca chips.

It stars beef bulgogi with kimchi slaw and cheese between slices of sourdough, toasted to ultra crisp ends. Alternatively, try a Hallouminati ($14) for a meat-free option—it’s no less satisfying with its grilled halloumi, beetroot-onion relish, smashed avocado, and mixed leaves.

There are three acai options here. We tried The Urban Bowl ($9.50/$13.50), where organic acai comes with signature toppings of mixed fresh fruit and your choice of sauce.

Go for cookie butter like we did, otherwise, your options include almond butter, peanut butter, Nutella or honey.

urban folks - matcha latte

On the drinks front, the Matcha ($5.50) is a decadently bitter latte to have, or you could go for the classic Black ($4) or White ($5).

Not too far away from Queenstown is Flock Cafe in Tiong Bahru, which has got pancake stacks and more. Otherwise, just next to Margaret Market is Margaret Drive Hawker Centre!
