As a big fan of Yeast Side‘s original store at King Albert Park, I was stoked to find out that the cafe now has an offshoot at Farrer Park. They’re most known for their sourdough bakes and hearty brunch fare, but having been a daytime-only patron, I snapped up the chance to check out their dinner menu.

Food at Yeast Side

While the menu here is largely similar to their OG branch, there are brand new items added to their night menu, available from 4pm onwards. There’s the elegantly plated Roasted Octopus ($18++), for instance, which features octopus tentacles on a bed of mashed potato and burnt butter beer sauce.

The octopus was well-seasoned and cooked to tender ends, though I wished the tiny pieces were chunkier for a more shiok bite.

Another new addition is the Fried Cajun Eggplant ($14++), which gets you strips of crusted eggplant with a fried egg atop, served with crushed walnuts. I don’t usually gravitate towards eggplant, but found myself devouring this side as it was delightfully crispy and flavourful within. The walnuts were lightly candied, adding a layer of crunch and sweetness to the vegetable.

Then there’s also the Crabcake with Coleslaw ($18++): a deep-fried crab cake round topped with a crunchy and spiced-up salad, finished with tobiko.

This was another favourite of mine; the pops of umami from the tobiko, paired with the savoury crab cake, made it a delicious snack altogether. My colleague wasn’t a fan of the heavily spiced coleslaw, which did throw off the balance of this dish a wee bit, but I wasn’t complaining as I loved its bold flavours.

It’s not hard to see why the Bestside Breakfast ($22++) is one of Yeast Side’s most popular pizzas. This brekkie-inspired pie features spinach, bacon, eggs, cheddar, mozzarella, and house-made tomato sauce, on a sourdough pizza base.

I loved how you get all the flavours of popular breakfast fare in one bite, but especially enjoyed the savouriness and greasiness of the bacon. If only the egg was runny, it would have been the perfect pie.

The Jambalaya ($25++) was another showstopper that arrived in a bright red splash of chorizo, peppers, and a house-made Cajun sauce. I enjoyed the kick of spice in each bite but found that the toppings had made the pizza base soggier than I’d liked. I’d recommend you tuck in stat before to avoid this.

All in all, Yeast Side’s sourdough pizzas impressed me with their generous size and decent tang. The crust, which was flavourful on its own, boasted fairly consistent spotting throughout, though I wished the bottom was slightly thicker to hold up against the hefty toppings.

If you’re up for a nightcap, there’s an exciting wall full of draft brews near the counter. The craft beer menu changes weekly, while the cocktails on tap rotate on a less frequent basis.

I particularly enjoyed the refreshingly light Oolong Hal ($16++), but wished it was a tad more spirit-forward as the iced had diluted it a fair bit.

Yeast Side also has an impressive selection of bakes, including their own rendition of the trendy cream-filled croissants in popular flavours such as Vanilla Pistachio Swirl ($8). Limited quantities are available exclusively at the Farrer Park cafe, so make sure you head down early or pre-order online!
