Auntie Peng Banana Pie is a new pastry shop in Katong Shopping Centre

If you haven’t heard of the brewing drama surrounding the famous Dona Manis Cake Shop these past few days, here’s the rundown: Madam Soh Tho Lang AKA Auntie Peng, a former co-founder and baker at Dona Manis, opened a bakery next door called Auntie Peng Banana Pie with very similar fare to the store it is now competing with.
Some have posited that Auntie Peng was “kicked out” by the current owner of Dona Manis. But at the time of writing, such notions remain only in the realm of speculation.

As its name suggests, the new store features what Auntie Peng is best known for: her banana pies, which cost $3.30 a slice or $33 for a pie of 10 slices.

When we covered the dish several years ago, prepared by Auntie Peng herself, we noted how each bite is a heady mix of buttery crust, sweet banana, fragrant coconut, and crisp roasted almond. And yet, the decadent treat is not rich to the point that you’ll struggle to finish the slice. You can probably expect the same in Auntie Peng’s latest venture.

Aside from banana pies, Auntie Peng also makes butter cakes and cream horns. If these offerings sound like your jam, make sure you head down to Katong Shopping Centre to check out this exciting “new” addition to our pastry scene.
