This Old-School Bakery In Balestier Makes Bread For Popular Kaya Toast Chains

Walk past Sweetlands Confectionery & Bakery, and you might think it is another nondescript, time-worn bakery in Balestier. The fact is, however, that this bakery holds incredible influence—it’s said to supply bread to many popular kaya toast chains, including Killiney Kopitiam and Fun Toast.

Sweetlands was established in 1960, and promptly began supplying bread to coffee shops in the area. While the bakery continues to operate on a business-to-business model, it also draws a large consumer base who flock to it for its hearty buns, traditional cakes, and more. They make all their bread in-store daily!

Some popular options include the Kaya Bun, where a soft bun is filled with a fragrant, housemade kaya. The filling here is really quite generous, with kaya oozing out everywhere with each bite. Also worth trying are the Coconut Bun and Red Bean Bun.

For a savoury alternative, check out Garlic Bun or the piquant Curry Bun. All the aforementioned buns are priced at just $1.60, which we consider quite affordable in this economy. Furthermore, the bakery has an offer of three buns for $4, which brings the cost of each bun down to around just $1.30.
