Beigelhaus Review: Bagels By Ex-Lolla Chef Near Tanjong Pagar MRT Station

Beigelhaus++ at Robinson Road

You know a dish is trendy when eateries bearing its name start mushrooming everywhere. Beigelhaus++ is one of the many new bagelries to open recently, and that’s indicative of the dish’s current popularity.

Beigelhaus opened along Robinson Road in April this year. It’s Muslim-owned and helmed by the former head chef of Lolla and NOX – Dine in the Dark, two restaurants that have won plenty of plaudits for being stylish and innovative. Those are more than enough reasons for us to drop by the bagelry for a taste.

Food at Beigelhaus++

The house-made bagels here come in two options: plain and sesame. We wanted to try the plain bagel for starters, so we made our first order with The Rendang ($9) as its filling.

Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, the bagels themselves were excellently done. There’s a freshness here that delivered on the “house-made” promise, and its somewhat malty aroma makes it all the better.

Meanwhile, the rendang’s aroma was inviting enough to keep me chowing down on the bagel. I could detect the crunchiness of the achar, which was a plus, but the slightly dry and tough beef was a letdown. The addition of cream cheese and fried garlic here did lift the flavours, however, and I liked the mild spiciness that the rendang sauce brought to the table.

Since the plain bagels were a success, we decided to try the sesame bagels next, this time with The Fake-R ($14.50).

If the pictures and the “fake” in its name didn’t already give it away, this bagel filling consisted of a plant-based meat patty. Interestingly, I thought the patty had a sort of gamey—though not unpleasant—taste, as if it were mutton. But that was quickly accentuated by the pungent truffle mushrooms laid atop the patty, and the rest of the filling—kombu butter, tomatoes, and pickled red cabbage—gave some savouriness and tang to the dish.

The sesame bagels were, like the plain ones, really fresh, crispy, and chewy. The sesame seeds on the surface added a nutty flavour, as well as a teensy bit more crunch..

Since I liked it a little more than the plain bagel, I decided to get the sesame bagel with The Pink Loxy ($15.90) as our last dish.

Those who love cured salmon will surely be impressed by this dish—I mean, just look at all those thick cubes of salmon packed into the bagel. They were fresh, juicy, and smeared with a super savoury cream cheese spread.

This bagel is filled to the brim with other ingredients as well, such as red onions, capers, and tomatoes. But perhaps the best of these was the apple fennel salad, which imparted a refreshing flavour and some sweetness to the whole.

Ambience at Beigelhaus++

beigelhaus-ambience

Beigelhaus++ is a small eatery clad mostly in black, but with quirky light signboards illuminating the place. It’s certainly a chic place to dine at, although its small size and lack of seats mean it isn’t the most comfortable place to have a long, bagel-fuelled meal.

The bagelry is a three-minute walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station.

The verdict

Beigelhaus++ offers some of the better bagelwiches out there, with a plethora of fillings to choose from and, most importantly, some fresh and spankin’ bagels. Give the place a shot if you’re one of those that have caught the bagel bug.
