Over the past four decades, Cuppage Plaza has served as a space of comfort for many Japanese salarymen, and has more to offer you than you probably think. 1. Yakiniku-Oh

Yakiniku-Oh is one of Cuppage Plaza’s most beloved restaurants, serving a wide variety of barbecue meat dishes and even A4 Wagyu BBQ Buffet ($67++ per person). The buffet includes all other sides and desserts, and has a time limit of 120min. If you would like to have some drinks to go with your food, you may also go for their Yakiniku and Drinks Buffet ($80++ per person) that includes all the food and a wide range of 51 alcoholic and soft drinks to choose from! If you prefer ordering ala carte dishes, the Kalbi ($9.80++) is the most affordable and popular Wagyu here. If you prefer more premium wagyu, you can opt for the Yakiniku-Oh Harami ($19.80++) or the Limited Special Wagyu ($24.80++). If you prefer more varieties of wagyu, you could also opt for the 3 Kinds of Beef platter ($29.80++), the 6 Kinds of Beef ($75.80++), or even the 7 Kinds of Beef platter ($99.80++).

Izakaya Naniwa demands all patrons comply with one rule: order alcohol when dining in. Children below the age of 18 are hence unable to visit this hidden gem, known to be one of the best-kept secrets of Japanese expats in Singapore. The izakaya offers Obanzai dishes, which are traditional home-cooked food from Kyoto that mostly uses fresh in-season ingredients. This is why the dishes available here change every day, but they do have izakaya classics such as sashimi, tempura, yakitori, and okonomiyaki.

3. Ebi Bar

Singaporeans pride ourselves on our food, and Ebi Bar takes that pride up two notches. They specialise in zhnged-up versions of Singaporean dishes, serving umami successes such as their Signature “Chao Da” Ebi Noodles ($15.90++), where the prawn noodle broth is prepared with 8 to 10 hours of hard work, using about 40 kilograms of prawn shells and heads. Their unique  Ebi & Vege-Crispy Fritter Noodles ($12.90++) is also worth a shot. If you prefer something more refreshing, the Salted Mackerel Fried Chicken ($6.90++) is definitely worth a try.

If you’re looking for delicious yet affordable gyoza and ramen, Gyoza No Osho is the place to be. Their signature dishes, including the Nirareba Itama (stir-fried pork livers and leeks) ($10++), Chasyu (sliced roast pork) ($8++), Ebi Chilli ($10++), Gyoza ($6++), Shredded Potato ($6++), and Subuta (sweet and sour pork) ($10++), are all $10 and below! Some of their must-tries are priced slightly higher, such as the Paiko Ramen (pork rib soup noodles) ($17++) and Stamina Ramen (Chinese cabbage and garlic flavoured soup noodles) ($17++), as well as Katsu Curry Rice ($16++).

Japanese fine-dining enthusiasts may be familiar with AOI . Their menu features a wide range of premium seafood and meats, including their Foie Gras & Hokkaido Scallop Steak ($38++) and Miyazaki A5 Wagyu Tataki ($45++). For those who enjoy sashimi, you can get their Sashimi Moriawase ($65++). True Breakfast, true to its name, serves authentic Taiwanese breakfast. You’ll find traditional Taiwanese breakfast foods such as the Sausage and Bacon Omelette ($9.30+), Pork Chop/ Floss and Cheese Omelette ($9.80+), and Pork Chop, Egg and Cheese Toast ($9.80+) here. On top of these, their lunch menu includes Braised Pork Rice (from $5.80+), Guo Shao Egg Noodles ($8.80+), and Beef and Tendon Noodles ($13.80+). Other must-tries include their Hashbrown and Bacon Omelette ($9.30+), as well as their Scallion Pancake ($6.50+). 9. Orchard Yong Tau Fu

Hidden away in a corner at Cuppage Plaza, Orchard Yong Tau Fu, faces long queues, especially during lunch. The eatery offers really wallet-friendly dishes such as stuffed lady’s fingers and chillies, sliced eggplants, firm and egg tofu, salted duck eggs, century eggs and lobster balls, going at $0.90 each, no matter which ingredient you pick. The minimum number of ingredients is seven, so each bowl of yong tau foo starts from $6.30. Instead of the regular laksa or tom yum soups found at other yong tau foo eateries, Orchard Yong Tau Fu differentiates themselves from other yong tau foo stores by offering their homey yellow soybean soup.

Keria Japanese Restaurant is an authentic and cosy hidden gem suitable for all, even the adventurous. We say adventurous because this is one of the few restaurants where you’ll find Shirako Ponzu ($16++), a fish semen dish. While the restaurant is relatively underrated, it can still be difficult to get a reservation at Keria sometimes. That’s why the restaurant recommends making a booking at least two weeks in advance.
