Pretty Good Muffins has cheap muffins and matcha latte
From hokkien mee to mee rebus, Chinatown presents endless options for foodies in the area. Besides these hawker gems, there’s a series of trendy cafes such as Spring Coffee, Durian Haus, and Bullock Cart Coffee, making it a hotspot for cafe hoppers like me. Adding to the list is Pretty Good Muffins, a newly opened bakery at Hong Lim Complex that offers freshly baked muffins at wallet-friendly prices.

If you’re lucky, you’ll be greeted by an eye-catching display of 15 muffin flavours. Otherwise, do note that not all muffins are always available at opening time.Â
A muffin here ranges from just $1.40 for the Almond or Cranberry to $2.50 for the Matcha Strawberry or Matcha White.Â
We started with their crowd-favourites: the Blueberry ($1.50), Seasalt Nutella ($1.80), and Banana Walnut ($1.90) muffins.
When we tore the Blueberry muffin into half, a deep purple blueberry sauce oozed out. The sweetness complemented the dense texture of the muffin, making it a great option for those with a sweet tooth. Likewise, the Seasalt Nutella muffin was generously filled with creamy Nutella, and the Banana Walnut muffin boasted a satisfying crisp exterior and fluffy interior.
The Matcha Strawberry muffin was a collective favourite, though it would have been nicer if the earthy and bitter notes of matcha were more pronounced.
If you’d like to try something different, get the Matcha Oreo ($2.40) or Chocolate Kaya ($1.70). If not, the Apple ($1.50) and Biscoff ($1.90) muffins are equally delicious alternatives.
Besides their range of muffins, you can also quench your thirst with their Matcha Latte ($4.80) made using famous matcha brands such as Niko Neko’s Yuri Matcha. Their matcha latte is priced at a fraction of what most cafes offer these days, so try and see if it’s to your liking!
Alternatively, they offer Cold Brew Tea for just $1, with different flavours every day such as lychee rose and strawberry green tea.
