Spuds Review: New Cafe In Orchard Serves Rainbow Cheese Fries And Nasi Lemak Fries

Loaded French fries at Spuds

Spuds Flatlay

With many Orchard food guides revolving around desserts, I’d like to shine some light on a cafe serving unique French fries for my fellow savoury food-loving friends ─ Spuds.

Spuds Store

Spuds is a Muslim-owned eatery at Midpoint Orchard that has only been open for two weeks. They offer more than 10 interesting loaded fries combinations, such as rainbow cheese fries and nasi lemak fries.

The owners of Spuds were inspired by the epic loaded fries that are seen elsewhere in the world. Realising that the fries we normally get our hands on in Singapore are pretty plain and basic, they decided to zhng their fries to give this classic supporting act a chance in the spotlight.

Food at Spuds

Unicorn

We’ve previously seen Muugu Fork riding the rainbow food wave with their colourful cheese dippers. Just when I thought this trend had exited the scene, Spuds caught my attention with their rainbow-coloured nacho cheese fries, Unicorn ($7.90).

Unicorn Mayonnaise

I snapped a picture of the rainbow-hued nacho cheese fries to upload on my IG Story instantly. As with all cheese fries, expect the typical strong flavours of nacho cheese, along with a pleasant tang from the mayonnaise. I would’ve loved the fries to be much crispier, but the softness was understandable especially since they were covered generously with the nacho cheese.

Bolobolo

Spud’s Bolobolo ($7.90) is a marriage between nasi lemak and French fries. The ikan bilis and toasted peanuts were a great addition, providing a touch of crunchiness when eaten with the chips.

Bolobolo fries

Each French fry was coated in a fragrant sambal chilli that had just the subtlest bit of spiciness. Even though it was slightly greasy, the minced cucumber and onion in the garnish helped to cut through the greasiness with their freshness.

Sunshine

The Sunshine ($7.90) shares similar flavours with a classic American breakfast. Topped with maple syrup, butter, tomato salsa, quail eggs and turkey bacon, this dish combines both sweet and savoury.

What hits you first is the smokiness of the turkey bacon, followed by the well-rounded sweetness of the maple syrup. The flavours were a tad jarring and overwhelmed my palate. However, do try this dish if you’re one who has an appetite for bold flavours.

Ambience at Spuds

Spuds Ambience

Tucked away in the Midpoint Orchard shopping centre, Spuds occupies a small space at the corner of Basement One. This cosy little shop has a casual dining space, with walls plastered with punny images and simple decorations to create a homely environment. It does seem like an uncrowded, no-frills eatery that makes for a great hangout spot.

The verdict

Spuds Verdict

No doubt, Spuds offers a variety of creations that will pique one’s interest. Even though their dishes could’ve been better executed, their loaded fries combinations are definitely unique. If you have a hankering for fries, you might want to consider heading over to Spuds to try out their offerings.
