24th July 2023

Chef Gan is a Hong Kong bakery in Clementi

Hawker bakeries are becoming more of a prevalent sight in Singapore. There’s the new, such as Butter Town, a bakery in Holland Village run by young hawkers, and old-school faves including Serangoon Gardens Bakery, beloved for their pillowy sausage and luncheon meat buns. Adding to this list is Chef Gan, a Clementi-based hawker bakery specialising in legit Hong Kong pastries.

Located in Clementi’s West Coast Market, the bakery is quite the hidden gem unless you live in the area. They’re best known for their flaky savoury pastries, coconut tart, and, of course, their bolo buns.

For savouries, they’ve got char siew pastry, tau sar piah in both sweet and savoury options, ma ti pastry, with its shallots and malt filling, and lao po bing, all made fresh on-site and priced under $2 each. The pastry is super flaky and their fillings are generous, which explains why these tend to sell quick.

Their polo buns are priced from $0.90, and available in multiple flavours. You’ve got classic char siew, but also interesting options such as red bean and even chocolate!

A visit to Chef Gan would be remiss without getting their Coconut Tart, priced at $1.70. The coconut filling is generous, far from dry, and lightly browned during baking so it’s got a hint of caramelisation. If you’re more of an egg tart person, you can take your pick between a Portuguese Egg Tart ($1.60), a Charcoal Egg Tart ($1.60) which comes in a charcoal shell, and a Flaky Puff Egg Tart ($1.60). The latter two both come with a flaky crust.

Aside from their Hong Kong treats, the bakery also has a number of flavoured muffins and filled buns under $2, the latter packed with salted bean, sardines, coconut, sweet potato paste, and more.
