One of my favourite things to do in JB is to go dessert cafe hopping. I love travelling from matcha cafes to artisanal bakeries in search of sweet treats to satisfy my sweet tooth. Recently, I discovered Mollie Makes, a new cafe near customs serving Chinese desserts with a contemporary twist. If you’re looking for another spot to add to your JB itinerary, this one’s worth checking out.

The current exchange rate is RM1 = ~S$0.31 as of 27 October 2026.

The cafe boasts a rustic Chinese look with traditional motifs and wooden furniture that’ll send you back to Season One of The Rise of Phoenixes. There are plenty of photo spots, so be sure to get your camera ready.

As aesthetic as the spot may be, they didn’t skimp on the quality of the desserts either. You can expect a wide variety of Chinese desserts, ranging from traditional classics to modern variants.

As a pistachio fanatic, their Pistachio Beancurd Mochi (RM15.90) was basically calling my name. Imagine a bowl filled generously with pistachio-flavoured tau huay, topped with stretchy mochi and cheese foam, then garnished with chopped pistachios.

This bowl met my rather high standards for pistachio desserts: it had prominent earthy, umami pistachio flavours, without being too sweet. The mochi also added a nice textural contrast—soft and stretchy with an indulgent milky taste. The cheese foam tied the whole dessert together, adding a subtle saltiness that offset the sweetness.

My dining companion preferred the Oh Yeah! Mollie (RM14.90), comprising a base of coconut jelly piled high with toppings, including coconut milk he fen AKA Chinese wide noodles, rose-infused chestnuts, and fresh mango cubes. It’s then finished with a heaping scoop of coconut ice cream and a sprinkle of toasted coconut.

This dessert can be described in one word: refreshing. The coconut jelly is QQ and jiggly, and reminded me of the Chinese dessert bing fen.

The coconut ice cream, on the other hand, was soft and creamy. The fragrant coconut flavour was further accentuated by the coconut he fen, which tasted very similar to actual coconut meat.

The fresh mangoes were also slightly sour, cutting through the richness of the dessert, while the rose-infused chestnuts provided a nice crunch.

To wash everything down, we ordered the Taro Milk Tea With Mochi (RM15.80), comprising Assam milk tea zhnged up with taro paste and handmade mochi, finished with a layer of cheese foam.

If you’re an orh nee lover, this drink is basically tailor-made for you. The Assam milk tea base was quite light and fragrant, allowing the stronger-tasting yam paste to come through. The mochi also added a nice bite: it was soft and slightly chewy, making it feel more like a dessert than a drink.

Interestingly, the dessert cafe offers a lineup of fresh shio pan.  We ordered their Mentaiko Shio Pan (RM8.90), and surprisingly, it could rival my favourite salt breads. It had a crunchy, buttery base, with a soft and chewy middle, and was garnished with mentaiko mayo, seaweed, and a slab of creamy Kewpie mayonnaise.

That’s not all: the bread is split lengthwise and slathered with more creamy mentaiko mayo for added umami.

Mollie Makes is located a seven-minute drive away from CIQ Jalan Jim Quee.
