9th February 2023

Best vegetarian bee hoon stalls in Singapore

Growing up, vegetarian bee hoon has been a staple in my family everytime the first and fifteenth day of the Chinese lunar months roll around. Fried bee hoon with stir-fried vegetables and deep-fried snacks isn’t the healthiest vegetarian dish around, but at the best vegetarian bee hoon stalls in Singapore, you’ll frequently find lines forming daily, even outside of those special days.

1. Tanglin Halt Ru Yi Yuan

Expect to wait in a long queue that can stretch around the corner, but loyal customers of Tanglin Halt Ru Yi Yuan will tell you it’s worth it. After all, their bee hoon ($3.50) is among the best in Singapore.

Have their soft, lightly peppered noodles with crunchy green chilli or their spicy sambal, and add on your favourite fried snacks like the crowd-favourite popiah ($1) and crispy mock duck cutlets ($2.50) made from beancurd skin.

At that price, you get a generous plate of bee hoon with cabbage, mock meat, and crispy zai-er, AKA mock goose made from beancurd skin. Their crunchy spring rolls and fried vegetable cake both go for just $0.70 a piece too, making this one of the most affordable vegetarian bee hoon stalls around.

For those of us who aren’t that old, but still find the location vaguely familiar, this spot in Tiong Bahru used to house Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice.

Bee hoon sets are sold from $4 and served with their house-made chilli. Also, all of their fried foods are fried the moment you place your order, so do get their fried snacks like the fragrant yam-based ngoh hiang and juicy, handmade mushroom rolls.
