Olsen Bakehouse in Joo Chiat for locally inspired cakes

If you’ve been visiting Olsen Bakehouse at Crawford Lane, here’s a friendly PSA: they’ve relocated to Joo Chiat! The popular bakery, known for their locally inspired treats, is now sequestered in a conservation shophouse along the same stretch as Tigerlily Patisserie, Petit Pain, Dickson Nasi Lemak, and Da Dong Prawn Noodles.

Fronted by a clean, white storefront, the bakery’s new digs are done up in an earthy-toned, minimalist style. There are no seats in the bakehouse except for a bench by the window, so it’s more of a buy-to-go kind of place. The bakes are made fresh every morning by their talented team of bakers, which also includes the founder himself.

The eight-year-old family-run bakery prides themselves on their siew dai AKA less sweet cakes, made with all-natural, locally sourced ingredients as far as possible. They’re not halal-certified, but their ingredients are sourced from halal-certified suppliers. Being a family-friendly bakery as well, no alcohol is used in any of their bakes.

For those unfamiliar with Olsen Bakehouse, their most popular cakes include Ondeh Ondeh, Orh Nee, Pulut Hitam, Milo, and even a Kopi, Kaya & Peanut Butter flavour! Most of their whole cakes start from $56 for a 5.5-inch cake that is good for five to six people. During our visit, we tried the Sesame Yuzu ($8 per slice), which was a light and well-balanced chiffon cake.

Go for the Orh Nee ($8 per slice), and you’ll find the same pandan chiffon here, layered with house-made orh nee paste, and blanketed in a purple-swirled coconut buttercream.

Some of the baked items are only available in-store, such as the scones and brownies, which are baked in limited quantities. Try the Strawberry Scone ($4) or Cherry Scone ($4) if you like sweet and zesty desserts.

The bakehouse’s only gluten-free item is the Sweet Potato Fudge Brownie ($4.50), a fudgy, vegan-friendly delight with fibrous sweet potato bits.

Coffee and tea are also available, such as the Cold Brew White Oat ($12) and Kombucha ($9). Olsen Bakehouse’s coffee is made with soy milk for a creamy mouthfeel and neutral flavour.
