Hawker centres are no longer only homes to the best hokkien mee or best bak chor mee stalls, some of them even house hidden gem bakeries with affordable treats. From fancy bakes such as matcha white chocolate muffins and black sesame financiers to old-school buns and sugar doughnuts, here’s our list of the best hawker bakeries in Singapore.

1. Cat In The Hat

Cat In The Hat is one of the most popular hawker bakeries in Singapore. It’s located along Beach Road with more than 10K followers on their Instagram page at the time of writing. Fun fact: this humble bakery is run by a mother-daughter duo.

What’s interesting about this bakery is that their menu changes up every month, with new and upcoming items announced at the end of each. For example, there were 10 baked goods to enjoy in October 2023: Brown Butter Spiced Banana Cake ($2.10), Smoked Pepperoni & Cheese Scone ($3.10), Lavender & Peach Tart ($3.10), Matcha & Black Sesame Financier ($3.10) and more. You can either visit their physical store or place your orders online via their website.

2. Mr. Bready

Mr. Bready is run by two friends by the names of Rodney and Jason, who have been in this business for eight years now.

The mighty pair specialise in huat kueh, made a tad different from the traditional ones we’re familiar with. Their huat kueh looks similar to a muffin, and they are softer than the old-school steamed cakes in terms of texture. There’s a variety of flavours to choose from, with the Dark Chocolate Cranberry ($2) being a hot favourite. Their Rose Lychee ($2), which boasts a vibrant shade of pink, is also said to be popular among older patrons. For something other than their huat kueh, get the Cinnamon Brown Sugar Bread Roll ($1.80) instead.

Address: 159 Mei Chin Road, #02-31, Mei Ling Market, Singapore 140159
Opening hours: Wed-Sun 10am to 3pm

They have a good selection of old-school buns, ranging from Coconut ($1.10) and Curry ($1.20) to Prawn Sambal ($1.30) and Cheese Ham ($1.10). Else, get the classics including Peanut ($1.10), Kaya ($1.10), and Butter ($1.10). While they are known for their buns, you can also give their Banana Cake ($1.10) and Butter Cake ($1.10) a shot.

For those with a sweet tooth, there’s the Chocolate Babka ($2.30) and Cinnamon Brioche ($2.10). They can also be purchased in a loaf for $18 each! Those who dig savoury treats can opt for the OG Grilled Cheese ($6) or Kimchi Grilled Cheese ($6.30) instead, which comes with a side of chips. Even better, they offer sets here including the Traditional Set ($4.90), and Coffee & Brioche Set ($6.10). The former gives you kaya toast, eggs, and a cup of kopi or teh.

Jia Mei Bakery is a hawker stall in Old Airport Road Food Centre that offers old-school baked goods at wallet-friendly prices.

If you’re dropping by in the morning, you get Egg Tart ($1.40), Coconut Tart ($1.40), and Sugar Doughnut ($1.30). Their Egg Tart will surely be to your liking if you prefer a crispy shell to a crumbly one. We particularly enjoyed their Sugar Doughnut thanks to the airy and fluffy texture, and the generous sugar coating was truly the icing on the cake. For those looking to get their buns, we recommend visiting from 12pm onwards as the aunty requires more time to prepare them.

If you work or live in Tanjong Pagar, pay Dozo House at Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre, where you can get a range of freshly baked breads under $3. Our favourite was the Chicken Curry Dozo ($2), which we thought was similar to a kare pan AKA Japanese curry bread as the dough was coated in bread crumbs and deep-fried to a lovely golden brown. Else, you can’t go wrong with their Pineapple Ham Naan ($2.20), similar to a neighbourhood bakery’s pizza bread.
