Guide to the best cafes in the East of Singapore

With so many new cafes springing up recently it can be hard to keep track of ‘em all. Here’s a compiled list of the best cafes in the East of Singapore that are worth your weekend brunch with family and friends.

1. Awfully Chocolate Bakery & Cafe

awfully chocolate best cafes in the eastImage credit: @awfullychocolatebakeryandcafe

Awfully Chocolate is famed for its chocolate desserts and cakes, but the brand also has some serious chops in the brunch department. Try it out for yourself at Awfully Chocolate Bakery & Cafe, the brand’s first and only flagship restaurant in the East.

The family-friendly eatery does a great weekend brunch buffet for just $38++ per pax.  Choose from house specials to complement their brunch spread: Braised Beef Pie, which comes with a 3-hour braised beef cheek, vegan Grilled Aubergine Steak, Brunch Lasagna and many other delectable favourites. Else on weekdays, they serve lunch from 12pm to 3pm and dinner from 6pm to 9pm.

While you’re there, be sure to nab a couple of pastries from their Weekend Fresh Bakes selection—great for dining in-house with a cup of coffee, or grabbing to-go. These are all baked fresh and in-house daily too.

Address: 131 East Coast Road, Singapore 428816

2. Big Short Coffee

big-short-coffee-drinks-2

Big Short Coffee follows a seasonal concept, where their drink menu changes every few months or so. At the time of writing, there are nine different creations, all innovated and handcrafted by the team.

big-short-coffee-mont-blanc

For starters, there’s Mont Blanc 4.0 ($8.50), a returning favourite on the menu. This concoction features cold brew coffee topped with vanilla bean French cream and finished with some orange zest and nutmeg. Matcha latte has been all the rage lately, and if you’re a fan, consider the Crema Al Matcha ($9+); it’s made with ceremonial matcha, condensed milk, and coffee honeycomb!

Get their Truffle Mushroom Pappardelle ($19++) to share with your friends. This cream-based pasta comes with three different types of mushrooms: king oyster, shimeji, and shiitake. Alternatively, the Beef Tenderloin Croffle ($24++) is an interesting choice that combines crispy croffle with sliced beef tenderloin, pickled onions, and spicy mayo. It’d be remiss of you to leave without trying their signature drinks, including Pistachio Latte ($9++), Earl Grey and Pear ($7.50++) fruit tea, and Blueberry Matcha Latte ($8++).

4. Cafe Wabi Sabi

wabisabi-flatlay

When Cafe Wabi Sabi opened at Everton Park, our team visited to try some of their signature items. Their sister outlet in Joo Chiat also serves up a bunch of Japanese cafe fare at affordable prices.

wabisabi-sukiyaki-don

One of the most popular items at this East-side outlet is Buta Don ($22.90++), where you get braised Iberico pork, an onsen egg, caramelised onions, mushrooms, and pickles atop short-grain rice. If you prefer seafood to meat, opt for the Salmon Mentai Don ($25.90++) instead, which replaces the pork with fresh salmon and tobiko. As for drinks, there’s Genmaicha Latte (from $7++) here, which is not commonly found in most cafes since matcha or hojicha latte usually takes the spotlight.

5. Seng House

seng-house-flatlay

Seng House is a family-run cafe that offers unique fusion mains. They have your usual avo toast and whatnots, but what’s interesting is their Hainanese lunch offerings.

seng-house-pork-chop-interaction

We tried two Hainanese-inspired items: the Hainanese Pork Chop ($23.80++) and Claypot Chicken Rice ($19.80++). The former stars a juicy Hokkaido pork loin doused in a special house-made sauce that’s sweet and savoury. Otherwise, the chicken rice is an equally delicious option that’s great for sharing. We recommend enjoying it with their house-made chilli sauce for a tangy and spicy kick.
